Please remember circumcision isn't the norm everywhere, in Ireland less than 4% of boys are done. And they are mostly for religious purposes like Judaism.

Yes, when done without consent and/or on minors without an actual medical reason for it. I don't think it's wrong to want it as an afult, or when done for medical reasons. But on healthy children it's barbaric.

It also seems that America especially has some weird body shaming going on in regards to foreskin. As a Swede, I don't get what that fuzz is all about. In my country, less than 10% of men are circumcized. I've only met one guy who had that procedure done and he was clearly not happy about it.

Personally I don't think anything badly of either circumsized or non-circumsized, but I do have a preference for the latter. I kinda just like how the penis is naturally and see no reason to mess with it. Also, intact foreskin does make sex feel a bit better for me as the recipient too, albeit to a very small degree. It just kinda slides a bit more easily/gently and makes giving oral more fun. I wouldn't reject a guy for being circumcized though, it's not a that strong preference. But it being so rare in my country, it's not really something I think about a lot.

While probably not as harmful as FGM, it is still genital mutilation. I had to put my foot down to my husband and extended family to say my son gets to be intact until he is 18. At which point if he wants to be cut, I’ll pay for the best urologist he can find.

Yes, I do think routine circumcision of infants’ penises is harmful. I refused to have this done to my child.

I’d be fine with a legislative ban, but as I’m not sure the US has the political will to get there, what I’d really like to see is the medical community taking a serious stand against it on human rights grounds.

Short answer is POTENTIALLY YES. The subtlety lies in that 1) not all cuts are the same (some men have “tight” be “loose” cuts that remove more or less tissue. And also the frenulum can be completely or only partially removed.) 2) most men from cutting cultures are cut at birth of young ages so they don’t know what they hear sensation or pleasure was like before.

I am adult American male and was cut at birth…I do not know anything from before but I have experienced a lot of mental health issues over my status. I worry it maybe be severely reducing my ability to have a very basic human being experience. I also find it humiliating and emasculating…I’m ashamed of my body and it has lead to me avoiding intimacy.

But even if it wasn't I would still be against it. Body autonomy should be almost perfectly absolute as a principle in my opinion, and no adult should be allowed to decide for a child whether a part of their body should be removed unless it is necessary to cure a life-threatening infection.

i’m african and it’s normal in my culture. it’s not forced and not all african males are circumcised. at least in my country they wait until 13. if they don’t want we don’t force them.

i’m aware that the west denies this because they assume the worst. when done, it is done by a proffesional. it is done properly and with consent. it is not forced like the media portrays. sure there are horror stories of serious physiological damage but it is rare.

with any procedure there is risk. but dare i say, because i minority practices it, it is automically wrong. because if it is banned in the west, people will only go to other countries to get it done. if anything, it is better to get it done in the west where circumcision is done by proffesionals. as opposed to, in the village, the sanitation isn’t the best.

Personally I think the foreskin is there for a reason, and it’s an unnecessary operation and not right to do to infants since they can’t make that decision.

Now my partner doesn’t agree, for hygiene reasons. And originally I said I would go with whatever his choice was, since I don’t have that body part. Yes. And I felt this way long before I had children. I listened to Dr Dean Edell who was a big anticircimcission opponent. No body modification for kids until they can consent. I didn’t have boys but would have advocated hard with my husband that they not be circumcised. And I refused to pierce my girls ears until they were old enough to consent (10). Neither have done so.

Infant male circumcision usually is an invasive, damaging, unnecessary procedure performed without the patient’s (I.e. baby’s) consent. It transgresses the principles of western morality and medicine.

Unless medically necessary, infant male circumcision (like female genitalia mutilation of minors) should be outlawed and the choice should be given to adults (or at least those who understand the procedure, its ramifications, and can offer informed consent).

I'm in the UK and it's quite unusual to find a man under the age of 60 who's circumcised. I've known a couple of men who've had it done for medical reasons (phimosis usually) but none that had it done as infants as a routine thing. It's not a procedure that is available on the NHS, unless there's a valid medical reason.

I don't agree with routine circumcision. We shouldn't be performing and permenent procedures on babies unless it's medically nessecary. That's also why I don't agree with piercing babies ears.

However, I don't think it's in the same category as FGM. A circumcised man will still be able to have a normal sex life. This isn't the same for women who are victims of FGM. There is a type of FGM which is close to male circumcision, which is where the clitoral hood is cut or removed. There are much more extreme types though. Where the entire clitoris is removed and the vagina is sewn shut with just a tiny hole left for menstrual blood. The male equivalent to this would be the removal of the glans or whole penis. Needless to say, this makes a normal sex life impossible.

Also the reasons behind FGM vs male circumcision is often different. I've spoken to many Americans who still genuinely believe that being circumcised is cleaner and healthier (not true of course). It's not done in an attempt to reduce men's pleasure. FGM on the other hand is often done to prevent women from experiencing pleasure during sex. Although intention doesn't remove the harm that's done, it is still important to take into account when we're talking in general terms.

Well...the few times it is performed as a matter of medical necessity are different, but most times it isn't medically necessary. And there's a small but tragic number of boy babies who bleed to death after the procedure.

When it isn't medically necessary I feel it shouldn't be subsidised by the government, shouldn't be performed in public hospitals, shouldn't be covered by health insurance and it should be illegal to proactively offer it...those seeking it should have to go looking for it.

Ultimately it would be good to ban it but I don't immediately foresee a time in which the religious issues around banning it get resolved.

I think, at least in the US, education and social influence to NOT circumcise babies would be more effective because there will never be a ban as it wouldn’t pass the “religious freedom” test. I’m not saying that to support circumcision in any way, just pointing out the reality.

You might get some doctors to refuse to perform them, but likely not enough to make a difference.

If you could mandate that parents are informed of the possible repercussions and educated about the more modern take on “health benefits”, you might sway some of the non-religious adherents but a lot of fathers do not regret their own circumcision and would choose it for their sons regardless of any medical education.

For most of us, the harm is minimal. I was circumcised but I don’t remember having it done, and I have no basis by which to judge what it’s like to have a foreskin.

BUT, I’m opposed to it for others because it’s unnecessary, painful, and there is the risk of a botched surgery that leaves boys/men with permanent damage.

I had minor phimosis and got a circumcision. Sensation improved afterwards. No major complications after the healing. It was a brutal surgery however and I would not recommend it unless full retraction is not possible.

I absolutely 101% thank my parents for getting me cut. I recently asked my DR about this, she said that you are able to feel alot more sensation due to the shaft being exposed, it's an extremely sensitive area that is now exposed, and ntm the hygiene aspect of it is the big reason. Dicks get dirty, and stinky... I'm sorry but with skin covering that area, I don't care if you just washed.... that shit is gonna get dirty very quick. My GF and 95% of the girls I've been with prefer a man whose cut, it's alot easier on the eyes which is a big part of sex.

It seems like this debate is always people who aren't cut, complaining and criticizing people who are. I never see men who are cut talking trash on men who aren't. But hey, to each his own.

I've seen the results of poorly done, painful incomplete circumcision; so I empathize with men on the topic. At the same time, not getting ur son circumcised makes him less desirable; I grew up with a guy that ended up insisting on getting circumcised n high school, he was Chad extraordinaire, but it was an issue for girls and an insecurity for him. I can't think of a female equivalent here n the US

I got it done as a child. At around the age of 15, when I did understand what is was supposed to do.

The reason was not religious, but a partially closed foreskin. It was made clear by the doctor and my parents, that it was an optional procedure at that stage, and we can choose to wait for a while. I read up about it, and realised that if I want to get it done, it should be at least a few months before I was going to be sexually active. (To avoid the initial hypersensitivity), so I anyways went ahead, as me and my then girlfriend were planning to "notch up the things to the third base"

I have got no major complaints. I can easily last 30 minutes in bed, if I want to. And it was a huge benefit, at least till O got married. Now, I do miss the ability to have quickies, because I need at least 12-15 minutes.

Sensitivity does reduce, for better or worse. And while it helps improve the quality of sex, it ends up reducing the quantity of it, in a marriage.

I have heard from people that the reduced sensitivity may lead to ED in an age earlier than a non circumcised penis (not sure how true it is), so I do a lot of keagle exercises.

But I do believe that doing it at a very early age, is not right.

No and I think it’s nowhere near as harmful as people say. Like for every case where some poor guy got his pecked chopped off, there’s another case where some other poor guy had to deal with health issues from his foreskin that led to it needing to get cut anyway.

Is it necessary and should it be pushed? Nah, and if I had a son, I don’t think I’d get it done.

Is it the same thing as female circumcision or some other horrible genital mutilation? Nah, it’s a thin piece of skin that barely does shit to begin with.

I don't think it causes major harm when it happens without complications.

You get uncircumcised porn actors, it's just not that obvious when erect, also i've heard they often pull it back during filming.

I think we can probably all agree it's fine when done for legal reasons, but otherwise, i think should be treated like any other form of cosmetic surgery. Fine if you want it done as an adult.

It's a cultural option and up to parents. We don't allow tattoos or piercings in men even as adults and it's just consistent if he's not. That's his business and not someone elses. I just don't think it should be anyone's business.

I don’t think women should have a say here. It’s been socially accepted for so long, that I think that would warp my thinking. Some men are ok with it and some aren’t. And I certainly don’t want to diminish the feelings of the ones who feel harmed.

It certainly seems barbaric. And just because something is socially acceptable doesn’t make it right. And some men have said it takes away some sensitivity. If we argue against FGM, then surely we should argue against this.

Harming males how? What are these ramifications? This is a cosmetic/hygienic procedure, I don't think I'd call it "draconian". Are you uncircumcised and the women you are encountering view you as different/unusual? Is the "harm" coming from insecurity about having a weird looking dick? If nobody were circumcised, there would still be dudes with weird looking dicks... so, I don't know if that's a perfect argument.

If humans were born with vestigial tails which made clothing fit weird and sitting uncomfortable, would it be "draconian" to remove those tails at birth to improve quality of life? Maybe foreskin isn't quite the same, but it's kind of close... we're not running around with our dicks flapping about, so we don't really need the protection it provides any longer. Seems like a useless flap of skin IMO.

Unpopular opinion, but no. I'm generally on the side of MRAs, but I think that male circumcision is a very small issue compared to the other problems men face and is more of a red herring than anything.
