Anecdotal, but in my case it was the guy who said he wanted to open up the relationship. I think it was just to cheat with permission, as he had a few women in mind when he asked. Shockingly, the magic words “my girlfriend’s cool with it” didn’t open up those legs like he thought they would and it made him even angrier because while he had been convinced it was me/his relationship that was keeping him from banging lots of women, he was faced with the idea it was his looks and/or personality that was keeping it from happening. When I got male attention he lost his shit and tried to control the situation by establishing new “rules” where were could veto partners or ask one another to turn down a date so we could spend time with each other.

The poly ended up being mono because I didn’t even sleep with the other guy until after we broke up due to his rage over the whole thing. I know of a few other couples with the same dynamic — guy has a side piece in mind and asks to open the relationship. Side piece blows him off; woman finds a guy. Boyfriend flips out, they break up.

Thing is there is poly and swinging. The former involves multiple relationships and is indeed mostly initiated by women. The latter is very much about the one and done experience and thus will often be initiated more by men. The participants in the former are often unattractive reddit types who often orbit a relatively average looking female. The latter? TBH its a toss up. I have met some ABSOLUTE STUNNERS in swinging. This basically gels with my experience. All of the poly couples I've known had a gregarious, outgoing woman and a total dork of a man and the woman was the one not only doing all of the external hooking up but unless the dude scraped the gunk off the bottom of the dumpster he wasn't gettin' none unless his partner somehow made it happen. I used to know this one couple where they'd show up to a party, she'd bring her boyfriend and her husband would go around totally not hitting on any of the women at all, for reals and then never actually go home with anyone.
I think part of the reason that the men don't initiate, at least online, is because women are really, really hip to (and adverse to) being the "unicorn" in a poly sandwich. A lot of guys out there looking to cheat on their partners say "oh we're poly" and gals want nothing to do with it. Plus women want what other women want so if the dude's wife is vouching for him then maybe she'll be more inclined to give it a go if she swings that way.

After my last breakup (which was absolutely awful because the relationship became so toxic and suffocating) I swore off monogamy. I use Blackdragon/Caleb Jones’ approach to “ethical non-monogamy.”

As someone who is no longer monogamous, I looked back at my relationship history I’ve had with various women in my life and found I actually have much more experience in non-monogamous relationships initiated by me. Every time I’ve initiated monogamous relationships, it’s been god awful and gone to shit (due to my own insecurities and bad partner choices.)

Either way, I’m simply no longer interested in it at this point of my life. Maybe later down the road when I decide to get married I’ll be monogamous, but I doubt it. A rotation is fun and variety is the spice of life.

You have to look at this in context. Firstly just because the woman initiated does not mean the man didn't want it all along, so its less that men don't want polygamy but its that most men just expect their female partner to not want or be comfortable with it so they never ask.

Secondly the argument is that men want polygamy not polyamory, its a very different thing to be ok or want with your girl having sex with other men then to want to have sex with other women. So most men can still want polygamy, but not see polyamory as worth the cost of it.

"Polyamorous" are not really polyamorous, but more like a monogamous couple where the man has a cuck fetish, of course women are going to be a lot better with this kind of arrangment.

I have known other people and couples that started because of the guy and some by the girl. At the end of the day it’s about have all consenting parties being honest, trusting, comfortable, respectful and be willing to communicate.

What helped me was reading “The Ethical Slut” and being honest with myself and my partners. It’s a lot of hard work and I would say more complex than monogamy. It’s not for everyone just as monogamy is not for me. It’s important to have partners who are fully onboard and are comfortable.

I'm in such a relationship and it was instigated by me (the man). I told my wife on our second date that I had no intention of being sexually loyal, and she needed to accept that if we were going to continue seeing each other. She decided to accept it, and 1 year later we got married.

My wife is very, very attractive. An 8-9 across the board, depending on your preferences (she's my type). I'm more like a 5-7 in the face (depending on your race), but an 8 in terms of body.
