Why wasn't there more outrage at PlayHaven? They fired a dude for jokes. Talk about an overreaction.
Adria at least had rationale: it was against the con rules, and she wanted to send the message that tech conventions shouldn't be lewd boy's clubs.

I love this comment. Love it.
I think that everyone should go out of their way to use "dongles" in this way as much as possible. Let's make it ubiquitous.
If you go to a tech conference, wear a t-shirt that has a picture of a USB drive on it.

"What the fork did you just forking say about me, you little dongle? Ill have you know I graduated top of my sales class at ITT Tech, and Ive been involved in numerous tech related conferences, and I have over 300 confirmed complaints filed on my fellow coworkers. I am trained in feminist ideology and I'm the best forker in the entire tech sales division. You are nothing to me but just another oppressor . I will wipe you the fork out with precision the likes of which has never been seen before on this Earth, mark my forking words. You think you can get away with saying dong like that to me over the Internet? Think again, forker. As we speak I am contacting my network of feminist and your job is being being taken right now so you better prepare for the storm, dongle. The storm that wipes out the pathetic little thing you call your life. You're forking dead, kid. I can be anywhere, anytime, and I can have you sent to HR in over seven hundred ways, and that's just with tweets. Not only am I extensively trained in ethical workplace conduct , but I have access to the entire arsenal of the SRS and feminist movement and I will use it to its full extent to wipe your miserable dongle off the face of the continent, you little dong. If only you could have known what unholy retribution your clever? joke was about to bring down upon you, maybe you would have held your forking tongue. But you couldn?t, you didn?t, and now your paying the price, you goddongling idiot. I will fork dongle all over you and you will drown in it. Your forking dead, kiddo."

You know that this would turn an innocent and somewhat immature joke between friends into actual, literal sexual harassment, right? Imagine being a female dev in a workplace where all the guys non-stop for weeks just kept talking about dongles? You don't think that's a little ridiculous, and creates a terrible working environment?
[–]luxury_banana5 points 13 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
Yeah, ALMOST as hostile as having the looming threat of some feminist blowhard getting you fired for some private joke about dongles between you and a friend. Almost.
Adult women aren't weak wilting flowers who can't handle the occasional double entendre. Every woman that I work with would be on-side with Team Dongle and would be wearing a Dongle T-Shirt in support.

I suspect the main reason she was fired is because their mail and webservers have been DDOSed all day, as opposed to the company realizing they shouldn't employ a lunatic.
I like the end result though.
[–]jvardrake349 points 13 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
Some of it's probably that ("We got rid of her! Please stop ddosing us now!"), but the main reason is probably because her official title is "Developer Evangelist" - her job is literally to convince developers/companies to use Sendgrid.
Her actions have done the exact opposite - she has brought them nothing but bad publicity.
[–]csgardner328 points 13 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
That's what I thought was funniest about this situation. This lady calls herself a "Developer Evangelist" She claims to advocate for developers, women, and SendGrid. She managed to screw all three at once.
She bullied a developer.
She made women look weak and whiny.
She made SendGrid look bad and probably cost them business.
Whoops.
[–]jvardrake159 points 13 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
And the best part is that she most likely thinks she did nothing wrong.
In fact, in her mind, she will be a righteous "hero" / "Joan of Arc", who was done wrong by her white ("Easy Mode 4 teh win!!1!", right guys?) male oppressors.
[–]girlgonedead120 points 13 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
From her blog post, it's clear that she considers herself a righteous hero.
I saw a photo on main stage of a little girl who had been in the Young Coders workshop. I realized I had to do something or she would never have the chance to learn and love programming because the ass clowns behind me would make it impossible for her to do so.
So, sexual jokes now make it impossible for women to get into tech? I wonder how any girl made it through middle school then because there's plenty of similar jokes found there.
[–]firex72695 points 13 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
Also he fails to mention she herself was making public dick jokes on twitter at that same convention!
[–]ArchangelleBDSM83 points 13 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
Haven't you heard? Only women are allowed to do guy talk now.
They may have dirty mouths with which they make dick jokes, but don't you dare offend their pristine virgin ears!
[–]Neurotikitty44 points 13 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
For real. Today I was listening to Katy Perry singing about a man showing her his penis (guilty pleasure music) when I started mentally replacing the words (as if it was a song about a woman showing her vagina). And realized how horrific to society it would be for a man to sing that exact song. Women are the only ones who are allowed to be lewd without being accused of objectification.
[–]prussianiron2 points 13 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
I wouldn't say it would be horrific (though I must admit, I don't know what song you are talking about, it could be raunchier than I think), because there are actually some pretty lewd songs by bands like Sublime, the Offspring, and Nirvana, plus other bands with male singers. Though I agree that there are some songs that would sound completely different to society with a male version, like "Like a Virgin" or "I Touch Myself".
[–]prussianiron5 points 13 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
The part that I completely don't understand about all this is why she got offended when they made a joke about dicks. Like, if they had said something about objectifying women, or something about how they would fuck that bitch in accounting, or something remotely sexist, I can at least see her getting offended. Shouldn't get the guy fired and make such an uproar, but I could see the offense.
But they made a joke about their own bodily organ that she does not possess, what right does she have to be offended by it? I guess next time a woman says anything about her sexual organs or her period, I should just post on twitter and get her fired, right?

[–]jvardrake55 points 13 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
I noticed that, too, and put it in my comment in yesterday's thread.
I especially also liked this statement from her:
Women in technology need consistant messaging from birth through retirement they are welcome, competent and valued in the industry.
That's equality to her - not both men and women being treated indifferently, irrespective of their gender, but women getting constant praise just because they are women.
[–]MartialWay22 points 13 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
Women in technology need consistant messaging from birth through retirement they are welcome, competent and valued in the industry
And no mention of being told they're competent when they're competent...they have to be told they're competent just because they're women.
[–]scottmelvin40 points 13 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
I had this exact conversation with one of the srsers lurking into the wild in regards to the lack of female politicians, ceos etc. They refused to acknowledge that if your feelings get in the way of what you want to do with your life (IE: they made a joke I didn't like, or made fun of me when I tried to do it, so I'm not gonna do it) they aren't cut out for it, or they didn't really want to do it in the first place.
[–]piman341 point 13 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
I think you're missing the point. She's arguing for the fact that degrading sex talk in general is harmful. Especially towards a young girl who is entering a male dominated profession. I think the backlash and negative actions taken as a response give much more of a bad name than her actions. Sure, there could have been other ways to approach it, but let's be real. Do we honestly think that if she had confronted the guys talking that they would have stopped? I think the only way for a win win here is to not make derogatory comments in a place where those comments might negatively impact someone else.
[–]girlgonedead1 point 13 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
I don't see how the sex talk that occurred was degrading, though. They were simply making a play on the words "dongle" and "forking," which are words that both happen to have meanings in programming and sexual contexts. Were they being unprofessional? Sure, but not derogatory. Nothing was being degraded and nothing was being objectified (except maybe dongles). So, I don't see how this becomes a gender issue at all. How do sex jokes make it harder for girls to get into a male-dominated field unless you are implying that women are weaker than men and can't handle the same jokes?
I don't think she necessarily should have approached them, I just think she should have refrained from taking their picture and posting it for the world to see. She could have alerted the conference staff to their behavior which would have been a tactful and mature way to handle the situation that didn't involve approaching them herself. She instead chose to post it on her Twitter account because she knew the backlash for them would be bigger. Is the internet taking it *too far and making it worse, like it usually does? Yes. But it doesn't make her actions any less immature.
I'm not meaning to imply that at all. I do agree that most likely the comments were misinterpreted by her, but I still think that all it takes is one person to misinterpret something to make it an issue. The gender issue stemmed from the status quo of the attitudes toward women in male dominated industries, and since she interpreted the comments in a sexual manner, that is how I am guessing she thought towards the girl. Just saying how I could see it.
I don't necessarily think that either, and I agree that the way in which she conducted her efforts may not have been the best. Also not justifying her actions, nor judging the maturity level of them. I do think that twitter generally is reserved for opinions of a more personal nature since it's generally easier to associate them with the person in reality, at least compared to a forum with an anonymous username. I also think the internet and community are over reacting, and coming to conclusions that may or may not be. So I am agreeing with you there.
[–]girlgonedead2 points 13 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
I see what you mean in how she could have interpreted it that way, but I guess when you couple that with the way she handled it, I just lose a lot of sympathy for her. But yeah, I agree she's gotten more than enough of a reaction for it now.
[–]bing_crosby57 points 13 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
And there are plenty of people who agree with her. Just read some of the things being tweeted at Sendgrid in response to the firing notice.
[–]frehop71 points 13 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
She is going to try to martyrize herself and the feminist mob will eat that shit up. I feel bad for sendgrid because all the negative attention they have been getting so far is probably only the tip if the iceberg.

Just to play Devil's Advocate, she has repeatedly said she does not identify as a feminist in the comments on her own page. I haven't read enough of her blog to know if that directly contradicts a previous statement or not.
[–]SteelCrossx9 points 13 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
She may not identify as feminist but she does directly invoke the concept of White Male Privilege. That's the essence of Feminist Theory. It's simply no longer a well defined concept, anyone can be feminist, or not, as they please in any way they please because no one is willing to make any strong, global claims as to what that means.
[–]muchachomalo2 points 13 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

Socially retarded doesn't necessarily mean disabled. Lack of or stunted growth with regards to socialization. I think of mild cases of aspergers or just general kookiness. I'm not going to argue about everything else that happened, but we've got to stop making this ridiculous claim that it was a private conversation. They were surrounded by people in an audience, at a presentation where a speaker was talking about getting more women in to the field, and they were representing their companies. It was about as private as a Twitter conversation, and that should have been obvious to them.
[–]deirox1 point 13 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
You're right, but I still think it's very important that they were joking among themselves and it wasn't aimed at Richards.
You're also right, but this speaks to the larger issue of the (for lack of a better term) boy's club mentality. So many guys seem to think they can still act like manchildren when they get into the tech field. This wouldn't happen if there were more women in the field, but more women aren't going to come to this field if guys keep acting like this.

Great. So by virtue of birth, I'm both a racist and an oppressor.

Gotta love that word game. Ok, fine - what is the word that means "prejudiced against a person on the basis of race", when power is not in place? Oh, what's that? There isn't one? English has over 600,000 words, but none that simply means prejudice on the basis of race? That seems rather ungood . . .
I pretty much dislike everything about this situation though. People's jobs getting canned because of overzealous peoples sense of interweb social justice is just bad all around.

To be fair, she lost her job because she was doing it poorly. Her job is to steer business to her company by making it look good. She did the exact opposite. Of course she got fired.
[–]Leinadro7 points 13 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
At best I'd give her the argument of institutional racism vs individual racism but saying black people can't be racist is just silly. But people who pull that argument usually do so while ignoring the topic at hand. Declaring that black people can't be racism becomes more important than whatever that black person did in he first place.
[–]DerpaNerb1 point 13 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
That depends on your definition of institutional as well.
And it still requires you to preface the word "racism" with "institutional" because it sure as shit isn't implied.
[–]SumYungGui4 points 13 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
I have NEVER understood this one, especially in the context of the modern day. Quite literally, the most POWERFUL POSITION (president) in the entire United States is held by a black guy currently. So does that mean that white people can no longer be racist because a black guy is in charge?
Isn't that slogan in the FemiNazy Handbook?

Honestly, I don't even agree that she be fired IF the only thing she did was tweet the guys picture.
IF that was all she did, and the guy got fired, and her response was "Sorry, I simply didn't appreciate the jokes, I didn't mean for it to go this far"... then you know what? While I would have still thought she should have simply asked them her self first, I would have forgiven her. I still think it's ridiculous that the one guy got fired... having a single person tweet a picture and say they said an offensive joke is simply NOT grounds to fire someone... the onus on that rests with the guys employer (playhaven).
But (and this is a huge fucking but)... that's not what she did. She expressed absolutely no remorse, and actually acted victorious that it went as far as to the guy getting fired. Not only that, but she is a total hypocrite (or a total fake)... her twitter (that is linked with sendgrid) is full of jokes that are FAR "worse" (if I was a PC-nanny) then the dongle joke, and she's doing it on a public platform. You cannot say you are offended by a dongle joke and then post a picture from Cards against humanity that says "And academy award for dying goes to the jews... or the joke towards a specific guy about stuffing socks in his junk.
BUT WAIT, THERE'S MORE
and on top of all this, she let her true colors shine when she started saying shit like : "It is impossible for a black person to be racist towards a white person, one is the oppressor and one is oppressed".
OR "Straight white male: life on easy mode"
I mean, "dongle-gate" aside, she is just a straight up sexist and racist fucking asshole, that spreads these "isms" on a public twitter where she represents her company. Even if nothing happened at Pycon and I just stumbled upon her twitter and read "Black people cannot be racist" (and imply that ALL white people are oppressors) and then saw that she was representing SendGrid, I would still want her fired.
Anyways, I'm glad that the public at large (especially in the tech sector, because this got WAY bigger than the MRM crowd) has shown that they won't put up with this feminist/SJW sexist bullshit. Hopefully spineless organizations like Pycon and Playhaven see this and realize that they don't have to pander to an incredibly loud, offense-faking minority.

As a company that provides SMTP email delivery, it's kinda helpful if your servers aren't lagging out massively due to DDoS attacks. I hope the developers get their jobs back.
[–]fireinthedarkness19 points 13 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
I hope some other company recruits them, I wouldn't want to work for a company that fired me without knowing the whole story.
[–]rds416 points 13 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
It works like this:
Her personal army got the guy who chuckled at "dongle" fired.
The rest of the internet got her fired for doing that.
Both times the companies probably didn't really want to fire either, but the way US business works it's too costly to keep controversial people in employment.
It's unfortunate that either of them was fired over such a triviality, but I think this is the only way to stop this gender feminist bullying insanity.
[–]Legolas-the-elf18 points 13 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
It really wouldn't have been difficult at all to keep the developer on. He's not a public-facing employee.
I don't see how she would have been capable of continuing to do her job in the face of the backlash against her. Her job revolves around building positive relationships with the developer community.
[–]Celda4 points 13 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
I don't consider what Adria did a triviality.
She should be fired for her actions, whereas the other guys did nothing wrong.
Alerting Pycon to a couple of annoying children was a triviality. Everything that snowballed from that is a whooooole different story.
[–]Celda1 point 13 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
What she did was, in response to overhearing two guys talking amongst themselves about dongles, was take their picture, post it on twitter and asking the organizers (and the public) to fuck them up.
Make no mistake - that's exactly what it was.
And that is no triviality - that shows you are a piece of shit (and more relevant, incompetent in the IT field), and should be fired.
jesus christ, it was just a picture directed at them to take care of it. "fuck them up?" Where are you getting that from that one tweet? Everything she said after that, and everything that happened, wasn't trivial, but that's a separate story.
If you take a picture of someone at a conference, then post it on your public twitter followed by thousands, and say that "these guys are doing bad things" and ask the conference staff to do something about it - you are trying to get those people fucked up.
Don't try to sugarcoat it - that's exactly what it is, no more and no less.
Either that, or you're just extremely ignorant/stupid and don't realize what you are doing.
She clearly didn't think very hard about what she was doing, that's for sure. But there was hardly a lynch mob out for these guys, compared to the Mongol elephant brigade going after her and anyone daring to have associated with her.
Posting the guys pics was hardly a vicious act itself, especially when compared to the reaction. Whatever she said after that I'm not going to defend or speak to, though.
Sorry, but I'm getting really annoyed that people say it was unfortunate that she got fired.
She was being a sexist and racist cunt to the demographic that represents the majority of their customer base, while on her public twitter that she uses to represent her company, where she then goes even further and says her company supports her twisted ideology (instead of simply claiming all of this as her own personal views) when her entire "job" description is to spend all day on social platforms being nice to people, networking, and bringing customers onto their product.
Completely ignoring every single thing Pycon-related... she did exactly the fucking opposite of what her job description was, and as such, was rightfully canned.
It's the equivalent of me having a job to try and get more black people as customers for somewhere and then I go on a racist rant and start dropping "nigger" everywhere while also claiming that my company shares my views.
You bet your ass I would also be fired.
[–]jady197114 points 13 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
DDOS is just a modern online form of boycotting. It is way more effective because is actually prevents people from using thier service rather than picketing outside a brick and mortar store. With no brick and mortar store there is no other way to picket or protest.
I think it was due to the backlash from customers. This issue polarized their consumer base so much the only real thing they could do is to distance themselves from the issue.
EDIT Also I am sure that a lot of her coworkers or clients refused to work with her also for thier own safety.

No, the main reason she was fired is that she is now unable to do her job: developer relationships.
She also spectacularly failed at it at the conference.
That is the reason SendGrid gives, yes. It's also a completely legitimate reason. However the fact remains that there was not a peep out of them until their mail servers went down.
It's possible they didn't notice until then. Noticing what happens online was also her job.
A fair point. She was probably the person running their Twitter account and contact email.
None shall withstand the power of swarm.
[–]leocadio621 point 13 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
I agree with this statement. I didn't think of it that way. If it didn't mess with the company's bottom line, she would most likely still be employed by them.
[–]bunnymeee1 point 13 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
The main reason she was fired was because she is the definition of a jackass. The DDOS attack was a consequence of her jackassery. Her termination was a reaction to that consequence.
She needs to hand in her female card while she's at it. She speaks for nobody who identifies with intelligence or empowerment.
TLDR; Good riddance jackass.

Whats the 'us'? I'm not here to argue against militant feminists because it would be like trying to convince Hitler that Jews are 'real' people. If they want to take one comment that one person made on this subreddit and think that all 'MRAs are all aggressive idiots' then so be it. I couldn't give one iota of a shit what they think.
[–]Collective824 points 13 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

[–]Clevername3000-1 point 13 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
You bring the whole thing down to this immature level when you do that. stop. It's not about appealing to 'militant feminists', it's about appealing to level-headed people who are curious. When they come in and see this kind of shit peppered throughout the subreddit, they roll their eyes and shut down any consideration for rational arguments. Just fucking stop.
[–]buster22091 point 13 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
Because you asked so nicely... no, how about you 'fucking stop' telling people how to act instead?
Besides, seeing as you went down to an 'immature level' and used profanity, I have decided I will roll my eyes and shut down any consideration for a rational argument. You are clearly of capable of it because you would rather demand something from someone than asking nicely.
It's precisely because of this pussy begging 'protect women's feelings' nonsense that the MRM is floundering.
That and the overuse of the term "white knight"
Thank you! I'm a guy who is trying to give this subreddit a fair shake, but when I see comments that equate any guy who defends a woman as "just trying to get some pussy" it infuriates me. Then the comments like buster's just makes the whole thing look like an echo chamber for a bunch of children who got dumped right before prom.
Like I said, I call a spade a spade so when I see 'white knighting' and 'pussy begging', I call it as such.
If you don't want to be labelled like that, then don't do it...
How do I know what "it" is when the definition keeps changing? Don't do what? Agree with women ever? Disagree with men ever? You're not really giving me anything clear to go by here.
[–]buster22090 points 13 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
Stick up for anyone when their actions are clearly those of a self entitled victim. That's what 'it' is.
Or you could, you know, argue the issue instead of calling people names like a child. You give people no reason to listen to you when you do that. Calling anyone a white knight just makes you look like have no defense, especially since so many people use that term for so many different reasons. Whatever definition you personally have for it doesn't matter anymore, because it's been overused to the point of banality.
Well, if it looks like I have no defense, then of course I will stop it! My entire identity is based on the approval of white knights on the net I have never, nor will ever, meet.
Lighten up. You acted in a way that made you come across like you were defending the actions of someone who royally fucked herself thus you were labelled a white knight.
White knighting and pussy begging has been so overused that it is also banal, yet people keep doing it...
Yet again, you make total assumptions of what my opinion is and label my entire personality on those assumptions. You have no clue what my opinion is, because you didn't bother discussing anything, instead deciding to lump me into some vague stereotype you've concocted in your head. You are exactly why no one takes this subreddit seriously, whether there's any reasonable arguments here or not.
No one takes this subreddit seriously because it's full of white knight pussy beggers, like yourself, who are unwilling to call out females on their shitty behaviour for fear that they will incur the wrath from some frothing at the mouth militant feminist.
Besides, this whole thing began because you got your panties in a bunch because I used the term 'stupid bitch' yet I'm the one who can't stay on topic and am discrediting this subreddit...? The hypocrisy is unbelievable!
Who's the militant frothing at the mouth here?
You...
It's funny how you are so quick to label and dehumanize anyone who doesn't conform exactly to your specifications, then turn around and denigrate militant feminists for doing the same exact thing. That's total hypocrisy. You set back any positive message this movement has by reacting the way you do, and by seeing anyone even willing to discuss it as SRS trolls. Sorry for not 100% agreeing with you, I guess? Apparently I'm a monster for not falling in line.
Nah, you just wanted to troll me about a term I used that you didn't like rather than discuss the content within it
I've discussed the content plenty, with the people around here who bothered to sound literate.

One of the things that bothers me about what the two men did was submit to the interrogation by the leadership of Pycon (albeit informal). This could have been a none situation for everyone if they had just said politely "I do not have to answer any of your questions, If you can present me with some proof that I actually violated the rules of the conference I would be glad to address it."
They did not have to deny anything just refuse to submit to an unreasonable interrogation. Of course they could have kicked them out for refusing to submit to an interrogation but that would have been bad PR for Pycon.
Personally I think the anonymous official at Pycon who made the boneheaded decision to confront these guys should have been the only person fired. That individual was the only one on the clock acting unprofessionally.
Shedding someone of their anonymity is really the only thing that works anymore. She was right to post their picture and complain to Pycon. Everything else she did is pretty indefensible, though, and honestly Playmore deserved more DDoS and backlash than that the company she worked for.
She shouldn't have posted the picture on twitter. She was just being a typical feminist who wanted to play the eternal victim yet this one blew up in her face. Like I said, she's a stupid bitch and I hope she never gets to work in the industry again. She has proved she's not a team player, she's merely an attention whore.

Here is the problem though and why it bothers me. If those dudes had been females and they were joking about their vaginas, and someone posted a picture of them online, complaining about sexual harassment, who would be the one getting in trouble here? Oh right, the picture taker.
Context is great, but look at the cultural context. Why do these guys even have to filter that shit? Its a complete double standard about the way men and women are allowed to converse. Considering this is a Men's Rights subreddit, you'll understand why the way we talk about the issue in here might ignore the basic obvious fact of context. We could care less about the context because its the cultural context that upsets us.
Most of us are regular guys who care about how we make other people feel and yet it fucking sucks to be singled out for having a harmless conversation in a crowd just because you have a penis. And that's what this is, straight male discrimination, because if it had been a woman making these jokes, no one would have said a word.
Why do these guys even have to filter that shit?
Because you and they are supposed to be fucking grown ups and should start acting like it? They were representing their employers there. It wasn't a fucking bar. They weren't off the clock.
Oh and by the way, whether you think that silly little conversation is harmless, that doesn't matter. Put yourself in someone else's shoes for once in your life. imagine a woman hearing that same stupid 'harmless' conversation day in, day out, from almost every male colleague of hers. I get why she got fed up at the conference, and I get why other women are tired of it. What about that whole #1reasonwhy trend a couple months ago? Did that just pass over your head? Did you not read the plethora of dumb latent sexism across the tech field?
If those dudes had been females and they were joking about their vaginas, and someone posted a picture of them online, complaining about sexual harassment, who would be the one getting in trouble here? Oh right, the picture taker.
Yeah, you're right, women never get publicly shamed on the internet over any little thing.

If you're not here to help, then leave /Mensrights to those of us who care about equality and standing up for unfairly treated men and boys.
You don't get to police people's language- thats not what Mensrights is about- Feminists love to make speaking honestly and directly taboo- I won't sit back and watch us do the same.
She acted like a bitch and she acted stupidly and her actions actively hurt the perception of women in the IT field and also seriously damaged the reputation of her company and the lives of 2 men. Stupid Bitch
Feminists love to make speaking honestly
It's not speaking honestly, it's speaking irrationally and emotionally. Something that women often get insulted for in here. It's blatant hypocrisy that needs to stop.
Language like that hurts the movement. We need to be better than that.

I had read the title of the post I saw about the original incident on Reddit, and assumed it was two guys being loud and obnoxious and yelling things at people. Not a quiet, private conversation. Sure, be offended by it. But to publicly shame someone for that, and to get one fired? That's pretty terrible.
[–]MartialWay2 points 13 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

Adria Richards used her soapbox as a developer evangelist at SendGrid
In fact, the next day she made a phallus joke herself (http://imgur.com/7XGY8wB). This suggests that her motivations may be questionable.
Yep. Sounds fair and unbiased to me.
[–]jady197198 points 13 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
A little side story bear with me,
My dad has a business partner, he is an asshole. That being said he has a view upon hiring black people, he will not do it. Now this is wrong and I have noted my objection on numerous occasions.
His reasoning was that he had a black employee, said employee was not good at his job. He was late, performed poorly and got fired. He sued the company because he said it was "racially" motivated.
My dad's company won but after months of expensive legal battles. This is why he will not hire any more black people.
Now I do not agree with his view but I have to admit I understand his reasoning. How does this apply you may ask?
Adria Richards caused her company a lot of trouble and cost it a lot of money. She did this under the guise of Woman's rights and Feminism. Do you think that the company will not think twice about hiring a feminist?
I think it is ironic that she has unintentionally done more damage to feminism than good.
[–]Demonspawn30 points 13 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
Unfortunately, as "racist" as your father's business partner is, what he is doing makes sense.
Because hiring a black person represents more risk, then said black person must be more qualified than a comparative white person in order to have the same expected net benefit to the company. The same is true of women in today's legal environment, and also of people with disabilities, because of similar laws.
It is one of the big reasons why this stacking of the deck with legalities hurts more than it helps.
[–]naturalethic25 points 13 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
That's why equal employment legislation actually hurts minorities. If you can sue because yer black, no one will hire you because your black.

I've had to correct people on this thread, but when the Incident occurred, she openly announced that she didn't consider herself a feminist.
A woman != a feminist
[–]jady19717 points 13 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
But she is a strong supporter of women's rights. Same thing.
She also has acted in a typically feminist fashion. She is most definitely a feminist she just does not want to say it.
I disagree. Many people want to call me a feminist because I fight for equality. I am not, I am a Men's Rights Advocate.
To call me a feminist would be disingenuous. Same thing with you labeling her as one.
[–]jady19719 points 13 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

Letter to PyCon:
OK... so I can see you're taking this incident seriously now. Presumably under the force of a lot of angry comments from people.... it would have been better if you could have seen right away what a big issue this is, but whatever, you're there now.
So you've added a couple of lines on the end of the Code of Conduct making it even more explicit that what she did was wrong. But still I have to ask, if this change had been in place last Sunday would it have changed anything? because as far as I can see it wouldn't. As far as I can see PyCon does NOT think Adria Richards did anything wrong or broke the Code of Conduct. As far as I can see PyCon does NOT think they did anything wrong in ignoring the picture she published of the male attendees and publicly humiliating them.
As a result I still feel that any man thinking of attending PyCon next year -- which Adria Richards has said she plans to attend -- takes the risk of being fired because she (or some other woman) decides to attack them.
As far as I can see the sex discrimination policy of PyCon still stands and so does the sexual harassment of men -- the hostile atmosphere created by this sexual McCarthyism. It would really help if you would clarify that (1) Adria Richards broke the Code of Conduct (you don't have to use her name - just say anyone who takes a picture of attendees and puts it on Twitter with an accusation against them is in breach) and (2) that PyCon broke its own rules in not addressing that situation when their attention was brought to it. And just apologize.

Wow, that's incredibly hyperbolic. If I were the kind of person to want to be offended, that would do the trick.
Someone posing as anonymous publicly sent a ransom to Sendgrid, threatening that if Adria wasn't fired Sendgrid would be DDoS'ed to hell and back. I'd say no matter the circumstances, that amounts to terrorism. Don't label this as a protest or boycott, it's a fucking hyperbolic mob out for blood.
[–]Coinin0 points 13 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
Meh, It's 4chan doing what 4chan does best: Pissing in the well. The only way to deal with a 4chan raid is to get DDOS protection (which is worth having anyway) and to ignore them. Taking them seriously is giving them exactly what drives them to do it in the first place.
As for terrorism? Comparing shutting down someone's server for a few hours to detonating an IED in a crowded market doesn't really fit. They're not out for blood, they're out for attention.
The violence! Heavens to Betsy! The violence!

Half the comments on their facebook/twitter are thanking them for being doing what's right, the other half are jumping straight to calling the thankers misogynists and racists and hoping she files an EO complaint. That's the contrast. It's why I'm no longer a feminist, even though I was one of the good ones, because most are incendiary and toxic like that. They are dangerous, would probably fail the three-mountain experiment in psychology, and have what seems like no empathy or conscience, only vitriol and inherent contrarianism to everything. We all had one of those childhood friends who would argue with everything, even to the assertion that the sky was blue. They're like that, except they're adults, and they get away with it by playing the victim card hard.
[–]CryenallPM42 points 13 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
To me it just seems that to the bystander, it looks like I'm picking a fight with a girl and people who don't understand come immediately to the aid of the female in some silly twist of irony, they take the help just to win without realizing or acknowledging that they just set back the equality movement back 5 years and I'm shunned to being the asshole. It ain't right I say.

[–]RebeccaTwatson22 points 13 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
Succinctly, it's to test whether or not a person (usually a child) has shaken off their egocentrism. In other words, whether a person is capable of acknowledging that other people may have different perspectives.
In the case of the three mountains (Piaget's test), a person seated in front of a model of three different mountains is asked to draw/pick a picture of what a doll seated somewhere else around the model would see. A person who fails the test would only pick out or draw what they can see, not what the other person or doll would see.
Most kids can successfully complete the test by 7ish years of age...
[–]ThatOtherGai13 points 13 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
Oh damn. That's a pretty deep insult, nice.
[–]RebeccaTwatson27 points 13 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
Indeed. I'm certain that if SRStrs were asked to do the test, they'd have to ask their Victim Studies professor what view they should pick.
To be fair, there's plenty of those people here, too.
[–]RebeccaTwatson1 point 13 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
There are plenty of people like that in all walks of life. In fact, they represent the majority of people, I would suppose. The difference between the normal world and SRS is the homogeneity of opinions in that community. Dissent is ubiquitous in real life; dissent in SRS/Feminism/Victimhood Studies/Religion is a one-way ticket to the pillory.
[–]Clevername30002 points 13 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
The idea that you lump all those into one basket kind of bodes ill, doesn't it? You don't think you're exagerrating a smidge there? YOu don't actually think SRS represents feminism, do you? It's a fucking community of trolls. If you're looking for actual feminism on Reddit you should check out /r/TwoXChromosomes or at least /r/girlgamers.
Feminism, Religion, Identity Studies and their Reddit derivatives are all founded upon the same basic tenet: dogma. That's the difference between those insular communities and the "real world."
In order to be part of any of the above insular groups, you have to believe in some stuff (or a lot of stuff) which cannot be proved, demonstrated, falsified or quantified. As such, your entire reason for being in those communities hinges on presuppositions which cannot withstand scrutiny. For example, feminism supposes numerous things, chief among them being the notion of patriarchy. As one cannot definitively prove that patriarchy exists, notions like patriarchal social structure, patriarchal manipulation of education/work, etc., cannot be demonstrated to any reasonable degree of certainty. To question any of those dogmas is to question the very basics of the larger ideology - if the ideology is built from a house of cards and you remove even one of those cards, the whole house crumbles. Dissent is therefore, on the whole, unwelcome, undesirable or, at best, discouraged.
In the "real world," you certainly have your fair share of dogmatic types, but you also have people who think rationally and reasonably. The influence of the rational and reasonable is not always great - it ebbs and flows - but it is always present. So, dissent in the real world might not always be popular, but it is allowed to exist. Dissent in dogmatic communities is a danger to the foundations of those communities.

It's essentially demonstrating theory of mind. If I remember correctly, some great apes can pass similar tests.
I'm not sure that it has been demonstrated in any other animal that your-species-truly. Perhaps you're referring to this?
Basically, we've discovered that a number of higher-primates can recognize themselves - that they're aware of themselves as individuals. The basic test for this is to plop them down in front of a mirror - if they react with hostility or become aggressive/defensive, it suggests that they cannot recognize that the reflection is actually "them" instead of another animal.
This is also related to the nature and development of the mind, but it's asking an altogether different question. It's not about whether or not the animal has "empathy," but whether or not the animal recognizes itself.
No, the experiment I'm thinking of involved a human with a bucket on his head being led to food by an ape because the ape understood that the human was unable to see it. I seem to recall they did similar experiments with other primates and found that they didn't understand that the human couldn't see the food.
These are very vague recollections from a couple of years ago though, so I wouldn't be surprised to find out I'm misremembering :).
[–]RebeccaTwatson3 points 13 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
Found it! Via Wiki, no less... To quote:
There has been some controversy over the interpretation of evidence purporting to show theory of mind ability—or inability—in animals. Two examples serve as demonstration: first, Povinelli et al. (1990)[11] presented chimpanzees with the choice of two experimenters from which to request food: one who had seen where food was hidden, and one who, by virtue of one of a variety of mechanisms (having a bucket or bag over his head; a blindfold over his eyes; or being turned away from the baiting) does not know, and can only guess. They found that the animals failed in most cases to differentially request food from the "knower." By contrast, Hare, Call, and Tomasello (2001)[12] found that subordinate chimpanzees were able to use the knowledge state of dominant rival chimpanzees to determine which container of hidden food they approached.
So, you basically remembered the gist of the experiment and at least part of the conclusion from it. Wiki says that you're incorrect about them having "outside perspective." However, [here's the abstract from the first reference.] (http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/2225758), and they conclude that:
The results are consistent with the hypothesis that chimpanzees are capable of modeling the visual perspectives of others.
So, in reading the limited information available from the abstract, my guess is that the chimps can easily tell when a person might have good information about food sources but that they cannot recognize when that person has been blinded to the answer - they basically don't know what a blindfold or bucket is.

Thanks, this made a lot more sense than the other explanation, I thought it was just meant to be a picture of three mountains and you only passed if you drew some random stuff that wouldn't be visible from you, which seems more like an imagination thing than anything else. You take a three-dimensional display of three mountains and display it from different angles to someone. Then, you ask them to select the view that someone else would have from a different angle than the subject's. If the subject was egocentric, they'd select the angle from their own point of view. If they chose the angle that the other person would see, they weren't egocentric.
In a nutshell. :)

[–]EvilPundit59 points 13 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
Of course the feminists will fight back.
But this is still a gain for us. It's the first time a feminist has been fired for defaming men.
Previously, it's always been men getting fired for offending women.
This is a significant turnaround. Also, the woman's actions were so stupid and inappropriate, that the feminists will have a hard time justifying her.
We might still lose this battle, but the war has changed.

That's not why she was fired. She invited controversy to her employer. That's really all there is to it. Don't try to slap a "Mission Accomplished" banner on this. A black feminist is a "womanist", a term coined by Alice Walker the year after she wrote "The Color Purple".
Though I can respect a thoughtful term coined in academic discussion, I can not respect labeling someone else in a way they don't wish to be labeled.
[–]Deansdale21 points 13 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
Yep. Up until now feminists mostly just angered lonely men like Thomas James Ball who had no power to defend themselves, let alone fighting back.
But now, at least it seems, they have angered a whole community: the IT crowd. I reckon many IT guys saw what happened and realised it could have been them. Maybe the guy who has been fired had some friends. He surely has lots of sympathizers. Hence the DDoS attack. Some people can fight back...
And maybe the process will continue and the number of IT guys waking up will grow. Feminists often go too far, but this time it backfired. They have angered some people who won't take it anymore. And they damn well shouldn't. Feminist atrocities must stop. Other people's lives are not their fucking playground.

don't worry i'm sufficiently guarded in this pit of vipers, but thanks for the concern trolling anyway. and bravo on the attempt to infantilize me, though the landing didn't stick.
please tell me, what part of:
The stupid bitch brought it on herself.
is logic and which is reason? because surely in such a place this would only be one of the top comments in this thread for containing one or both of those.
Well, first off. If you agree with what she did you are a child. Refusal to accept other people for who they are is very childish behavior, as well as eavesdropping on other peoples conversations and publicly humiliating them. All pretty childish actions, which I'm assuming you agree were the correct course of action for her.
Regarding logic and reason.
Subject verb affected object. It's simple English really.
The stupid bitch. This woman, is a bitch and we think she's pretty stupid, hence she's a stupid bitch. Brought it on. The actions for which she is being punished were her actions. Herself. The person being punished for the action is none other than the stupid bitch in question.
So, logically.
To be a little more grown up about it.
Adria Richards has brought this misfortune upon herself when she foolishly took offense from a conversation that had nothing to do with her. Further, she attempted to publicly shame 2 people who had no interaction with her whatsoever. Finally, she's a racist and a bigot so anything bad that happens to her is just the result of cosmic karma.
[–]HokesOne-3 points 13 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
a marked improvement, but you're still working off a fundamentally flawed premise. it's not childish to expect people to comport themselves with respect while in public and be aware of their surroundings. those men were careless at best and more likely (given the prevailing male attitude in most settings) being intentionally provocative.
also, i'd be curious to know what the reasoning is for believing that profane name calling and revelry in petty vengeance is somehow more mature than wishing people to not be chauvinist buffoons in public.
anyways, you lot have managed to rate limit me so this will be the you hear from me on this thread, waiting 9 minutes between comments is rather boring. a tip of my fedora to you sir.
Oh, I didn't know you were there. So, how provocative were these two pigs. How much should we change ourselves so women can feel comfortable? I'm sorry, but if you want to get into a male dominated field you kind of have to assimilate.
We're not allowed to have safe spaces away from women(thank you feminism), so when you do come to our spaces, you kind of have to fit in or get out. You don't come into my house and expect me to cater to you.
It's not petty vengeance, it's justice. It is petty name calling, but hey the bitch deserved it.
The stupid bitch
This part is logic. One can assert that she is stupid because she posted racist and sexist tweets while going around accusing others of being racist and sexist. This is pure stupidity/arrogance in assuming she would not also be punished for said behavior. And one can assert that she is a bitch for showing zero remorse after learning that her immature behavior (narcing someone out instead of asking them to please stop) led to a father losing his job. Logic
*(she) brought it on herself
And this part is reason. She put into play the series of events which led to her being fired. She (wrongfully) believed that because she is a black woman that she can't be held accountable for expressing racism and sexism towards white men and she (wrongfully) believed that she was somehow playing the "hero" by breaking the code of conduct and publicly shaming that man by intruding on his conversation and posting his picture on twitter. She never would have been fired if she had never attacked that man in the way she did. A mature adult would have simply asked him to lower his voice. She didn't. Reason.

Well she got banned from TAM that time for getting pissy with DJ Growthee...
Something about if they want to have her attend they need 50% female attendance and a women's safe space.
DJ told her to walk
[–]McFeely_Smackup22 points 13 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
She wanted TAM to adopt a harassment policy that would basically allow any woman to have any man banned from the conference at any time for any reason she felt sufficient.
DJ told her no because it was totally unreasonable and that they already had conduct policies that were reasonable and non-sexist.
When she tried to play the victim card to a gay man, that was when she lost the last shred of credibility and threw her "I'm not attending" tantrum. To which the collective response was "oh darn".
[–]d3isgay3 points 13 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
I would love to see a non feminist report of her TAM fiasco.

Got more on that bit? I never heard about this gay man.
[–]McFeely_Smackup1 point 13 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
I meant DJ Grothe himself, he is openly gay.
DJ is gay?
Yep. When he used to host the "Point of Inquiry" podcast it would come up now and again when it was relevant. Now that he's not podcasting so much, it probably doesn't up very often.
If you've never listened to Point of Inquiry, I highly recommend it. It's gone downhill a bit with rotating hosts since DJ left for the JREF, but DJ's old interviews are some of the best I've ever listened to. The guy is a master interviewer of smart people...he's either brilliant himself, or has "show prep" down to an art form.

[–]boss1000-15 points 13 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
She's not a bad person for tweeting a picture of two people breaking the rules of a conference and calling for action. No one should have been fired here.
Yes she fucking is! She should have simply turned around and politely asked the two dudes behind her to stop with the dongle jokes. How hard is that for a normal human being, let alone some PR goon whose whole job revolves around talking to people? But no, she had to--like a petulant child--find herself an authority figure to get these two guys booted from the conference because she's on some damn crusade against something that doesn't exist. She is also a bad person because, well, did you look at her twitter feed? She's a lunatic, and extremely spiteful, and totally unapologetic for her actions. Fuck her.
[–]boss1000-3 points 13 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
There could have been valid reasons to not address the individuals, like not wanting to start an argument or be harassed. She did not use that reasoning and instead jumped zealous to public shaming, which I disagree with. I only mention these possibilities to at least open up the idea that not everyone wants to confront a situation personally.
One is not a child to ask for rules to be enforced by those responsible for enforcing them. Again, you can despise her methodology, but you're attacking the wrong thing.
They were not booted from the conference. They were talked to outside the presentation about it and problem solved. The rest of the incident was escalated by the companies.
Sexism in the tech industry and world is rampant. This incident didn't explicitly have to do with that, but sexual humor can make women uncomfortable, since it is often subjective towards women, which was part of her motivation to act. Not that I agree she chose the best course of action, again.
[–]BadArtStudent3 points 13 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
If she is not a bad person would it be at least reasonable to say she is bad at her job?
[–]boss1000-1 point 13 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
Given that she has taken rash action before in similar ways, I would now say yes.
But I do not believe the people downvoting me all day were so reserving or conservative of judgement before more of her history came out. The incident alone should not be cause for termination.
[–]BadArtStudent2 points 13 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
I would say that she is there to provide a good public image to sendgrid and this incident alone compromised her ability to do that. Therefor she can not do the job effectively and should be fired. It is just good business. She could be in the right even and it would still be a good idea to fire her.
[–]anachronic1 point 13 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
Considering that she, herself makes penis & racist jokes publicly (on Twitter) yet sought to get 2 other people fired for making some penis jokes really does mean she's a bad person... or, at the very least, a dirty hypocrite.

[–]RomusLupos21 points 13 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
Yes, I am afraid it was. When she brought a private matter into the public light, it becomes her fault.
Was the comment inappropriate? Maybe. Could it have been handled in a private matter without some delusional ditz calling herself "Joan of Arc"? Absolutely.
She's still responsible for quite a few blatantly racist and sexist tweets done on the twitter profile where she represents her company.
completely ignoring every single thing that happened at Pycon, you're a pretty fucking shit "tech evangelist" if you are racist and sexist towards 95% of your potential customer base.
She should have realized her privilege.
As a black female in an industry that is struggling with accusations of racism and sexism her words carry more weight than say some white guy.
And especially when those words are about her being offended by sexist remarks.
Maybe she didn't say "fire them". But then a white guy in 1950s Alabama doesn't explicitly say "lynch him" when he spreads the rumor that some black guy is going around raping white women. But he has a pretty good guess as to what will happen next.
She used her position of privilege to harm those she considered lesser. It backfired.

[–][deleted]29 points 13 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
Well she is black AND a woman. You're not allowed to fire her for ANY reason.
[–]springy27 points 13 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
Actually, many years ago I worked for AT&T and they were looking to layoff workers to save money. They selected quite a few, but never the worst performer in the team. The boss said they could never get rid of her because she was female, black, and elderly. As a result, loads of white, young, men lost their jobs before her. I do understand that discrimination is a serious issue, but keeping a bad performer around for fear of lawsuits left a bad taste in my mouth.
Keeping her on because she was female, black and elderly is also discrimination.
[–]Samurai007_2 points 13 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
Yes, but she won't complain about that discrimination, so it's ok. In today's world, discrimination is only bad if a woman or minority says it is, and discrimination in their favor is to be applauded.

I once had a coworker that the company was scared of firing because she was crazy and would presumably pull the race and gender cards at any moment. Like eight years on payroll contributing almost no work. That's almost an achievement in itself.
[–]csgardner6 points 13 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
I don't think she can win a wrongful termination suit. She may get a settlement, but it would be tough to win.
The primary reason is her "SendGrid supports me" tweet. AFAIK SendGrid did not state that officially, which means she was setting public policy without going through official channels. That is 100% a firing offense. Heck, my company doesn't even want me to publicly state where I work if I'm not officially representing them, for fear that what I say will be accidentally considered public policy.
SendGrid was probably really worried about what to do until she pulled that boner, then their way out became obvious.
[–]coldacid3 points 13 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
On top of that, as a "developer evangelist" you're expected to be a public face for the company. Causing drama among the very people to whom you'll likely be promoting the company's products and services is ridiculously counter-productive, not to mention unprofessional. As someone expected to do PR and educational work for a company, that alone is a firing offence.
[–]HoopyFreud-1 point 13 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

It shouldn't be hard for them to show the quite blatantly racist/sexist comments she made while representing her company as reasons.

[–]rackmountrambo15 points 13 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
She was just fired.
[–]Arby0123 points 13 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
Good for Sendgrid, I was responding to the "Pycon was fair and reasonable". I don't think they were. Adria should have been dumped from the conference for violating CoC or had to take down the picture/some form of "oops, violated CoC, my bad" - It appears that Pycon's handling was reasonable and professional to the two guys who she pointed out, without applying their CoC to the person who posted a picture.
[–]st_gulik2 points 13 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
The CoC was only updated after she did what she did.
[–]Arby012 points 13 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
Hmm. I was given to understand there was already language in the PyCon CoC about respecting attendees privacy, something that picture taking definitely is not, but I can not find such language posted publically, perhaps my criticism is unjustified and based off of false information.
[–]st_gulik1 point 13 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
From what I read PyCon reported that the language was added by them after the incident.
[–]Arby011 point 13 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
Yes, they added language about taking conference issues to a public forum without the chance for the conference to address them. I thought that I had seen a statement about pictures/privacy being part of the original CoC however.
[–]notcaptainkirk2 points 13 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
Prior to this even they implicitly forbade what she did, after the fact they made it explicit.
PyCon did NOT do the right thing. They did the EASY thing. At every turn.
[–]trycatch15 points 13 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
Nobody was "tossed" by PyCon.
No individuals were removed from the conference, no sanctions were levied.
Code of Conduct and procedures handling harassment were improved, and it's disputable if Adria's actions violated existing CoC.
[–]Arby016 points 13 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
Sorry. It is my understanding that the developers in question were removed from the "lightning talks" session, even if they weren't asked to entirely leave the conference while Adria got to remain/return to that session. It is also my understanding that Adria's violation of the code of conduct is what alerted them to the problem to begin with.

What women never mention is how many perks they get by being attractive/young women in the tech industry.
They NEVER bring this up.
My ex was 35 .. and VERY attractive. She was invited by CEOs to literally EVERY party. Offered lots of jobs, and generally made friends with every successful male in the tech industry within months of San Francisco.
She had introductions for FREE that took me years to obtain.
It has its downsides... sure. But perhaps women should refuse the perks if they want fair and equal treatment.
[–]Armageist19 points 13 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
Many women don't see that as a perk, they see it as patriarchy in action, especially the ugly ones. The pretty ones will be more than happy to go a long with it, until you call them out on it, and then you're just a hateful spiteful misogynist like how we call out hateful spiteful misandrists/feminists.
I'm not sure what the right way is to go about it. Calling everyone out on their ways to get ahead, or accepting the ways to get ahead as just the way it is, thereby not really changing anything for the better.

I hate to be too pedantic, but people don't seem to know what a "dongle" is. It's not a USB keydrive.
A dongle CAN be a USB device, but not necessarily. A dongle is a hardware key for software licensing, basically a hard version of an activation code. They used to typically be parallel or serial port plugs, but now some are USB keys.
[–]brdma1 point 13 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
And computers used to have vacuum tubes, weighed several tons, and took up hundreds of square feet. My point is that definitions are quite dynamic, especially when relating to ever-changing technologies. USB dongles are dominant enough now that it should now be acceptable if someone pictures one when the word dongle is mentioned.
On the same note, a dongle can also refer to wireless receivers for WiFi and Bluetooth devices, most of which are USB. I don't know which they were referring to in this case, but it seems pretty possible that this could have been what they were referencing.

http://pastebin.com/ubmznGhn This gives perspective.
Essential this person is incredibly bigoted both to those outside her race and gender, she publicly, via twitter, attacked someone using the race and gender cards, and anonymous went in for an assault.
Or so I've gathered, I don't have all the details, I'm sure someone more informed can elucidate and/or correct me.
[–]csgardner2 points 13 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

Another redditor did the whole analysis far better than I did:
What started it all:
https://twitter.com/adriarichards/status/313417655879102464/photo/1
because some one made some jokes about 'forking' and 'dongle' (that weren't directed at her) that she didn't appreciate, so she reported them.
That's the one where she says only white people can be racist
Here's the whole exchange:

[–]CMOS2229 points 13 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
Looking at the twitter feed, it amazes me that nobody commenting there could give a damn about the guy who got fired, yet everybody is extremely upset that Richards got fired. The indignation. How dare somebody treat her as unjustly and with just as much lack of proportion as she treated those men.

I hope this becomes a trend. The more women are held accountable for their stupidity and the more public their consequences are, the more people will be thinking twice before pulling crap like this thinking they will get away with it. could this be a first small victory on the road to holding women who murder their husbands and children or rape children up to the same standard as men?

I think it is cool the way so many women are calling bs on Adria's getting offended and publishing the guys pic.
Yeah this has been great, she has been shit on by both genders equally from the start.
Now it seems to be mainly black women "defending" her (they're using it as excuse to get money in for blackgirlcoders or whatever it's called) and fat, ugly, white, bearded male feminists who are trying to encourage people to donate to blackgirlcoders to "piss off white dudes" or something equally pathetic.

[–]Aeide6 points 13 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
Honestly, if she was that offended all she had to do was turn around to the two guys and say "hey, would you mind not cracking sexist jokes? I'm offended and would like to enjoy the conference". That's it. She'd still have her job, the guys would have their jobs, and this whole debacle never would have taken place. It's fine to be offended for something somebody says, but do you really have to tweet a picture out to thousands (now after the whole thing exploded, probably more like tens of thousands) of people lambasting them when you can simply turn your head and exchange polite words? Yeesh.
[–]thinksInCode9 points 13 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

TO RECAP
Bitch was at a technology conference. Guys behind her begin talking about dongles and forking. She gets pissed, takes their photo, blogs about it, and posts their images online everywhere. She also goes to the conference leaders and has the men kicked out for making 'sexist jokes.' One of the men is fired for his 'sexist remarks.'
Bitch celebrates this fact, comparing her self to Joan of Arc on twitter.
Freedom fighters bring this to her employer's attention. Points out she's using company resources to wage a vendetta against a couple guys on company time. DDOSes her employer. Employer fires her. Feminists become enraged.
Don't compare yourself to Joan of Arc and act surprised when you get set on fire.

You want to make a public spectacle, don't be surprised if it doesn't go the way you want and you have to face the consequences. She got what she deserved. End of story.
/r/programming had even more comments, and it just got deleted. It's no longer listed in search or "other discussions". http://www.reddit.com/r/programming/comments/1aqlp4/sendgrid_fires_tech_evangelist_adria_richards/
The whole thing has been a cluster fuck from day 1.
Should the men have made the "dongle" joke while sitting in a public place, probably not. I've been to similar conferences, you can hear what people are saying around you. Should Adria have photographed them and put it on twitter instead of just asking them to stop, "absolutely not", especially as her job is to be a 'Developer Evangelist".
Should PlayHaven have fired the developer for his comments, also not.
Should anonymous have DDOS'd sendgrid disrupting their core business. No... SendGrid probably has many good employees who do not deserve to suffer because of Adria Richards. SLA is a key metric for these companies and this directly effects their uptime.
PyCon suffers because most techies want to go to conferences to learn things in a collegial atmosphere, not to walk on eggshells.
Hopefully this will be the end of it.
Should the men have made the "dongle" joke while sitting in a public place, probably not.
Everyone has their own vernacular. I would never make a dongle joke (not b/c it's immature, but tacky imo), but I could easily call my friend a "dick" in public if he stole my seat or something. I would never have thought some psycho might dox me for it and get me fired.
[–]TheEquivocator4 points 13 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
This whole affair is so...messed up. I mean, I'll admit there's a certain satisfaction in seeing her attempts to get other people in trouble backfire in her face, but I think a much better resolution to this situation would have been for everyone to keep their jobs, not for everyone to lose them.
[–]Armageist2 points 13 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
I hate to agree. All it will do is breed/foster more hate on both sides of the fence as we see with Jezebel and Feminist Frequency. We see it as justice, they just see it as Patriarchy (All boys club) in action, whether that view is justified or not.
But in all honesty, they will never see things that work in men's favor in an oppressive environment to men as justice and right, just as many don't see the same for women from their viewpoint as everything being oppressive and unjustifiable.

i haven't been able to follow this too much recently. i heard a bit about her, but can someone fill me in on this adria richards situation?
[–]deirox5 points 13 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
Adria Richards overheard two men joking about "big dongles" at PyCon. She took a photo of them and uploaded it to Twitter, saying it was "not cool". Staff got involved, but apparently the guys left on their own accord.
The next day Richards boasted on her blog how "the future of programming was on the line and I made myself heard." Lots of support for her on Twitter and her own blog for "taking a stand".
Then it turns out the guy who made the joke got fired. Suddenly lots of backlash against Richards. The website of her employer gets DDoS'ed. Richards is fired. Some cheer for justice, others declare her a martyr.
Does that sound about right?
[–]coldacid4 points 13 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

WHAT IN THE FLYING FORKED HELL IS A DONGLE?!?
[–]Crimson_D826 points 13 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
A dongle is a small piece of hardware that attaches to computer, TV, or other electronic device and enables additional functions such as copy protection, audio, video, games, data, or other services that are only available when it is attached. The term "dongle" was originally used to refer only to software-protection dongles.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dongle
Its a good thing she was fired. Now if only we can prevent her from working in this field some where else. Blacklist her from every convention as a bully and potential threat to everyone at every conference she potentially attends.

Next mission: Get the fired man a new job?
This was apparently from the guy who was fired. "As a result of the picture she took I was let go from my job today," the post said. "Which sucks because I have 3 kids and I really liked that job. She gave me no warning, she smiled while she snapped the pic and sealed my fate."
[–]Bohica692 points 13 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
She was irrelevant to begin with. She's not a programmer. She's not in technology. She's a glorified sales person who, now, will not likely work in technology ever again. I'll wager she'll lawyer up to sue to her employer for wrongful termination, and EEOC violation claim, etc. Wait for it.

[–]Sasha_1 point 13 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
One thought: Adria's actions were the result of feminist-thinking, whether or not she herself says she's a feminist.
It's the result of thinking that woman = complete absence of responsibility.
Gender pay gap? Earn less? - Unfair, it's mens fault and discrimination.
Sexual violence? Nothing to do with what I wear or how I behave. It's mens fault.
Men die younger? That's mens fault, they don't take care of themselves.
Not enough women CEOs? That's mens fault, it's a boys club up there.
Men die in combat? That's because men are violent thugs.
Men commit suicide more? That's because they don't talk about stuff - it's their own fault.
Mostly men at technology conferences? That's because men exclude women.
Pictures of pretty women in womens magazines? That's because women have to try and appeal to men. It's mens fault.
And the result? Adria could actually tweet that '#ILearned that all I have to do is share how I feel, and let go of the consequences'. Because she's not responsible for anything she says or does, because she's a women.
And now she'll be shocked that she's instead being treated like a fucking grown up.
The only part I disagree with is this, "Sexual violence? Nothing to do with what I wear or how I behave." I don't understand how you can honestly believe that.
HALLELUIAH!

Adria Richards was fired from SendGrid on fair and reasable grounds. She brought her employer under very negative and destructive public scrutiny and, because of that public scrutiny damaged her employers reputation and standing in the business community.
Also, it's pretty well known in the tech community that Richards has a history of behaving as she did at PyCon and I would strongly suspect that SendGrid was already aware of her previous outrageous outbursts and toxism at other conventions she'd attended or been part of.
To say that they "buckled to pressure" from so-called "hactivists" DDoSing their site is, to say the least, not logical and, at most, to say its nonsense.
The reality is that Richards was fired for bringing something to public attention which should have remained private between herself the two men she FELT offended by and the PyCon staff.
Adria Richards and all like her are what I choose to refer to as Toxists. These are people who, by their nature, create and generate toxic social, political and workplace atmospheres wherever they go.
Finally, there's no absolute proof one way or the other of what actually took place which created this enormous shitstorm in the first place.
the three involved were not in some isolated part of the convention, alone by themselves, they were surrounded by literally dozens of other people.
My question, and one which will haunt me for a long time is, why has no one else who was in that row of seats or ajacent to them, people who could clearly and obviously see what was going on, stepped up and spoken out? At least, then, there would be either corroborative or disproving evidence regarding Richard's accusations.
Finally, what strikes me the hardest is that we were left with nothing but Richard's tweets and posts, alone, regarding her accusations.
This causes me to wonder why no one bothered to ask her to demonstrate proof or corroborating evidence to support her claims?
Finally, the whole thing just strikes me as utterly ridiculous, laughable when you think about it long enough and, in reality, should never have happened in the first place. It's my most sincere hope that such an outrageous and ridiculous thing never happens, again!
[–]Nomenimion0 points 13 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
Although Adria Richards is an obvious moron who thrives on the attention she gets for being "offended," I'm tired of people getting fired just for speaking their minds. (Including her targets of phony outrage, of course.)
This is not "freedom."
[–]Armageist6 points 13 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

[–]boss1000-4 points 13 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
No one should have been fired here.
None of this should have happened. It's a shame she fell to hysterics over nothing, the whole thing could have so easily been avoided.
except for the psycho who doxed some one for likening a dongle to a dong, cried sexual harassment, claimed to be the joan of arc of sexism & that the future of programming was on the line (egomaniacal much?), and has more and more people walking on eggshells at work because who knows, maybe you calling your friend a "dick" might get you fired.
[–]porkchop_d_clown-4 points 13 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
I'm sorry but while I think Richards was a dick, her employer should not have caved in to what amounts to a terrorist attack:
Firing her to make the DDOS attack stop was simply pathetic.
[–]areyounew3 points 13 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
Uhh.. she was a PR person who gained a ton of negative fame. They had to fire her because she was damaging.
[–]porkchop_d_clown0 points 13 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
And that had nothing to do with their entire business being disrupted by anonymous attacks?
I highly doubt it's the primary reason. You should read the statement SendGrid has put out, they basically say the same thing that I have.
They were risking a lot of money and possibly their entire company by keeping her onboard, period. They don't owe her anything, she did this all to herself.
[–]circuitology-6 points 13 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
Guys, hold on.
Is this a victory? For whom?
Wouldn't the real victory be in the guys who made the joke to be hired again, or an apology?

[–]Crimson_D821 point 13 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
Guy.
Only 1 was fired and they CHOSE to leave after staff spoke to them at the event.
Your lack of understanding disappoints me.
[–]circuitology2 points 13 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
My point still stands whether it's one guy or two.
[–]jolly_mcfats-13 points 13 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
Hm. I don't like this. Adria Richards fired off an entitled tweet. Pycon claims to have just had a talk with the two, which is appropriate, and someone claiming to be the guy claims to be fired.
The tragedy is that the guy lost his job. The responsible party is his employer. Neither Adria Richard nor the guy should have lost their job. Everyone else should have just told them to chill, and work it out between them.
We want a de-escalation of this shit, not an environment in which people are afraid to talk because they lose their jobs.
--edit-- Since writing this, I have learned that Adria Richards' JOB was to represent her company, rather than to write python code, as I had thought. I now agree that she should be fired.
[–]RomusLupos33 points 13 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
Incorrect. Adria Richards brought the whole thing into a public light, and cried oppression. You reap what you sow. If you don't want to be responsible for your comments is a public light, keep them private. SHE.DID.THIS.TO.HERSELF. PERIOD.
[–]jolly_mcfats-1 point 13 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
Do you know if Adria Richards was there as a developer, or if she was employed as a "developer evangelist" or whatever the stupid term she used was?
If she tweeted in a professional capacity, I agree with you- because her job was to be smart about this stuff. If she was just there as a developer, and she happened to consider herself "a technical evangelist" or whatever, then I still think that we should have a technical culture in which people can occasionally say stupid things without losing their jobs, and that this is an example of two wrongs not making a right.
[–]RomusLupos8 points 13 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
It does not matter if she were there on a personal or professional level. The point is that she chose to take what should have been a private matter, and post it to Twitter, thus making it public. Once she did that, she no longer can hide from her comments and actions, as they are now in the public view.
Well, this time SHE CHOSE to make those comments and actions public, and now she pays the price for doing so. This was all of HER OWN DOING. This whole situation could have been handled in private, but she decided it was a good idea to make an example out of those two, thus making an example out of herself as well.
She was there professionally.
[–]jolly_mcfats4 points 13 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
in that case, she deserved to be fired for being bad at her job.

Unfortunately, in the tech industry, you only get ONE online persona, all of your different accounts are cross-referenced and fucking up on one will affect the others.
[–]coldacid1 point 13 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
Clearly you've never held a job with PR being a major part of your duties.
[–]jolly_mcfats1 point 13 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
Please reread my post, because I think you are chastising me for having the same opinion that you have.
Sorry, but that post of yours just reads like a total ass-cover.
[–]jolly_mcfats-2 points 13 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
lol whatever. Here's an upvote since you seem to think that is the only reason people have conversations.
I didn't actually downvote that comment, but I certainly will downvote this one of yours for being a prat.

she made the company look bad, thats why
[–]Rourne-6 points 13 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
Agreed, this shouldn't be about tit-for-tat, but should be about ending the gender war. Let's remember that Adria didn't express any inclination of wanting them fired (though it seems she didn't express any remorse either), that decision was an egregious error on the employer's part; THEY are the ones to blame for that guy's termination, not Adria. Going for the ol' eye-for-eye and having her fired now is only, as jolly_mcfats correctly pointed out, going to lead to escalation and will, as some others here have pointed out, in her mind, and those of her supporters, vindicate her actions and open many lucrative avenues for her to "be brave and share her story." In the end, the best way to neutralize the bully or aggressor is to make them powerless; remove their influence. By firing that guy, they legitimized Adria's nonsense and displayed their own weakness and ineptitude.
MRA as a whole has trouble taking the long view and sometimes gets mired in the endless bickering with feminists; the end goal is NOT greater protections for men, but EQUAL protection for men and women. Anything less than true gender neutrality and let's face it, we're sexist.

[–]NUMBERS23572 points 13 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
She didn't fire him, his company did.
The one reason I'd say maybe she should have been fired is that she tweeted that her company supports her position. I imagine that took the company from the position of "let's not touch this with a 10 foot pole if we don't have to" to "shit, now we have to say something". Once she claims the company has a position on this rather controversial issue, then the company has to actually take a side.
Even so, I don't like rooting for anyone to lose their job unless they physically endangered someone or they're in the government.
[–]blueoak918 points 13 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
I really wanted to see her blacklisted, and she may well be - she is obviously a huge liability to anyone who has anything to do with her.
[–]brrrrip8 points 13 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
Getting fired over a public disaster, that she caused, that unfolded over the social media/marketing/communications outlets as a specialist of social media/marketing/communications probably will not go over too well on her resume. Plus, that name(and her face) is burned into my brain after the past couple days.
She is effectively blacklisted as far as the internet is concerned. Type her name into any major search. This is the very first thing that shows up on my Google: http://venturebeat.com/2013/03/21/breaking-adria-richards-fired-by-sendgrid-for-outting-developers-on-twitter/
I'm sorry. I'm happy she had to suffer the same consequences of the PR fallout as the other two guys did. I only hope we all have learned a few, very decent, lessons here. Watch what you say, and mind your manners in public. Private may not be as private as you think. So, watch yourself anyway. You must be 102% sure. And, no one likes a tattletale.
I'm feeling what you are saying though. I can't hold her for this situation. The punishment is over and was just imo. But, this situation did show me what kind of person she is. I would never want to associate with her in the future. I'm glad I know who she is now. I wish I knew who the other two guys are, but it's probably best they stay as under the radar as they can be right now. I will live with just not knowing.
TL;DR: She is effectively blacklisted. I agree, she would be a liability. Dang, I can write a book really fast. If I could only think of a good story...

[–]5th_Law_of_Robotics5 points 13 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
It sounds like she's basically a salesman. Or rep. Whatever. And she made her company look horrible and may have lost them business.
You are entitled to your opinion.
I want to see her unable to ever find work again in the field of tech.
[–]IHaveALargePenis4 points 13 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
Her job is from what I can gather, to be some kind of in-between the programmers and business partners/customers. She's supposed to represent the company, help put it in the spotlight and make it popular in a positive way for potential customers. She has so far done the complete opposite.

What a terrible situation all around. Guy gets needlessly fired and slandered, women in tech get marginalized, SendGrid loses face, and this girl got fired for a personal blog post. Where's the Justice?
[–]rackmountrambo40 points 13 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
When did the women get marginalized?
[–][deleted]41 points 13 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
If women in tech were damaged in any way it's due to the actions of this woman.
[–][deleted]27 points 13 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
Women in tech may have a harder time getting hired because employers want to avoid any Adria types who would cause trouble. That's entirely her fault though.
[–]IHaveALargePenis13 points 13 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
CS major here, tech companies have plenty of "women only" crap out there, not just scholarships or events, but interviews for job applications and whatnot. I've had plenty of class hours dedicated to how great some company is by someone giving a presentation only to realize it was for women only. And yes, they did go ahead and waste 30+ peoples time for 30-60 minutes for the 1-2 girls in the class.
[–]OuiCrudites-26 points 13 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
Good. Women deserve to get marginalized when most of them condone supremacism and double standards.
[–]rackmountrambo21 points 13 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
Guys, this is complete horse shit. She's batshit, but the other 99% of women programmers are just normal compassionate people.
[–][deleted]14 points 13 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
I heard she was'nt even really a programmer anyway, what the fuck is her job again?
[–]Dolvak18 points 13 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
She hypes up sendgrid to get people to use it. She kinda failed in that aspect.
Well to be honest, after her firing it's not going to be all bad press for them.
[–]Dolvak6 points 13 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
Yup, I would have fired her for failing to do her job.
[–]rackmountrambo10 points 13 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
Developer Evangelist.
That means she hams it up with programmers to convince them to use the SendGrid service. So, a salesperson.
[–]Greyfeld1 point 13 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
She's a marketing specialist.

The sad fact is that actions like this do just polarize the Women in Technology movement making men angry at it for making trouble where there was none and attracting more radical women to get involved to fight for a perceived injustice they see with all the negative backlash at women like Adria.
I am a software developer and attend many conferences every year. In the last 3-4 years most confs now have dedicated sessions and/or luncheons to discuss the issue of WIT. I’ve always been a supporter of the cause and often times been part of the talks. Until this last year most discussions have been very fruitful and positive about finding ways to support and encourage more young girls to get into the STEM fields, finding ways to mentor women in the fields, how to handle harrassment, etc.
However, I’ve noticed over this last year that many of these events are now being taken over by strong anti-male feminists to become pulpits for them to wage a perceived war of the sexes. I’ve seen them manipulate entire luncheons from positive discussions to all out male bashing sessions where they get the women to vent every perceived incident of sexism and claimed discrimination for every negative thing that has happened in their careers. You end up seeing an entire room of women get riled up looking for blood to spill and it’s just multiplying with every conference I attend.
Heck recently there was an entire conference cancelled due to negativity around women claiming sexism b/c there were no women speakers selected for the event. the event staff just killed the whole conf due the the hate they received even though they pointed out that they had an open call for people to submit to be speakers and not a single female applied.
[–]xanderjanz-10 points 13 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
Her response marginalizes what are sometimes very real and serious sexism problems in the tech industry. This specific situation was of course stupid and irrelevant. But it makes the women who do actually deal with sexism look like childish complainers.
I get that's not part of the whole /r/MR message, but I work with developers, and I can tell you real (non-joke) sexism does happen sometimes.
[–][deleted]26 points 13 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
The point is that she's one of those types who see sexism and racism everywhere. And she jumps straight to those cards because of her deep seated prejudice. She has also stated on her twitter that she doesn't believe it's possible for black people to be racist because only white people are oppressors. Same with sexism. That makes her the one who is sexist and racist.
[–]baskandpurr6 points 13 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
So are developers more sexist than nurses, teachers, or any profession that is dominated by one sex? Prejudice does occur in those circumstances, that doesn't mean that its common or that only one sex or race commits it.
In two decades as a developer I can't recall any sexism against females. Maybe I didn't notice it or perhaps I've been lucky to only work with enlightened people. Still, two decades would suggest that its not just random good luck.
You say that like it all just HAPPENED, like the girl who got fired for a personal blog post wasn't responsible for the entire mess.
[–]xanderjanz-8 points 13 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
She certainly wasn't responsible for the ENTIRE mess. She didn't fire that guy, and she didn't hack SendGrid's website. Those two events claimed to be in response to her, but it doesn't make her responsible.
[–]superstubb5 points 13 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
Those 2 events are a direct result of her actions and faux outrage.
[–]IHaveALargePenis3 points 13 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
She's being held accountable for her actions, so there's the justice. Given the way she has acted and the things that have been brought to light from her past comments, she's finally hit that "we won't tolerate your shit anymore" wall. It started with her and will probably end with her and everything that's happened so far has all been because of her.
