This truly is a case of 'Drunk words are sober thoughts'. This man was pining after his ex for THIRTEEN FUCKING YEARS, and said that, without a single thought, if his ex wanted him back, he would have dropped OP and gotten back with her. Kids and family be damned. That's a painful thing to do to someone, and it leaves the recipient with a lot of self-esteem and trust issues later on down the road: and this was something that her husband was willing to do to someone. He went to his "friend's" bachelor party because of the hope that he'd run into his ex again and he couldn't just parse in his mind that shit was real.

She's never going to trust him again, and it will always be in the back of her mind that he settled for her and will dip when he finds something better. Men are only as faithful as their options, and this is a reminder of that.

At that point, divorce papers would be imminent. There is nothing to save here. He just told her that he didn't value her. She was a source of security to him, and there was no love there. Counseling will never save this - this is a structural problem. In some cases, things like this would lead to an annulment if done in time.

And the comments in this thread? Fucking ridiculous. They love to jump on people and tell them to breakup at the slightest red flag, but then you get shit like this where there's so much red that it looks like a Taylor Swift album, and they're just saying "Maybe you should just talk it out." FUCK THAT. People are saying things like "Hurt people hurt people". Why is he hurt? Because he didn't love OP. He viewed OP as Miss Maybe.

Reading this made me immediately think of that Twitter thread that went viral. It consisted of numerous tweets from different men (and possibly women about their exes?) indicating that they settled after letting the one get away. Being caught in that moment of nostalgia and feeling of “what if”.

THIS is why for the love of god, don’t go for the guy who hasn’t healed from a previous relationship or have broken up with their partner so close to meeting or dating you. You don’t want to end up being the rebound for life.

The thing is these “moments” of nostalgia aren’t moments it’s their true thoughts. They get so wrapped up in this narrative of “the one who got away” which ends up being a result of not fighting harder for their relationship, women realizing they’re doing the settling by being with men like this or just ultimately things didn’t work out and there wasn’t a true reason as to why. So many men don’t have support systems like us, so naturally everything gets held up inside with no emotional outlet and low and behold they’ll still be wishing for a life they could’ve had with that “one girl” 13 years later. It’s honestly such bullshit and just another excuse for men to treat women like this like garbage in a hot millisecond.

Can we talk about the things men say when they’re drunk? I dated a guy who used to say the most batshit crazy things when drunk. Among the shit he’d say, he’d refer to our relationship as just a fling, (we were bf gf already)say he couldn’t trust women, that he felt one day I’d fuck him over, and told me to shut the fuck up when I asked if he was ok to drive after having had a drink. I always confronted him afterwards when he was sober and he’d say those things were just a joke, and he felt really bad about telling me to stfu, saying it’s because he and his ex used to talk to each other that way when they drank. I believe there’s truth to things people say when drunk.

Thinking back over my past, there have been a few times when some dude has wistfully declared that I'm "the one who got away." 🙄 Whatever. I feel terrible for the wife, but I have potential second-hand embarrassment for the husband. I don't think a lot of these men really love the one that got away. I think they get these realizations about the joy they felt with a woman but missed out because they have to slay dragons (sleep with a lot of women) but usually can't because they're not as attractive as they thought, get desperate and settle for the nearest woman who will tolerate them. Many said just that. They don't even like the woman they settled for, she's just a convenience.

I guess I function as "the one who got away" for someone. I fell for it after going through my divorce, I was (am?) so depressed I couldn't even shower. We found each other after no contact for 20 years, very romantic /s. The familiarity, the poisonous sweet talk, the fake comforting, I was too week to resist. But then reality hit and his behavior played out EXACTLY like every sane level headed person can prophetizise. He would never shut the fuck up about his past relationships, how I rUiNeD him for other women, how he is so so rational and introspective it drives a wedge between him and "normal superficial women".. unlike ME, of course... BARF.

I don't remember specific details cuz it was so trash lmao. basically he really really liked a girl, but she treated him like crap and kept leading him on, yo yoing him, basically insulted their friendship when he had valid concerns about stuff she came to him with. he told me that she broke his heart. he also told me if she wanted something he would drop everything without thinking for a chance to be with her again. I asked him why he is willing to put someone on a pedestal that hurt him so much and clearly doesn't value him. he said that's one of his issues he's trying to work on.

when we're processing trauma from years and years of male depravity that's naturally difficult and hard work they tell us we are dramatic and exaggerating and should just get over it by getting under someone else 🙄. but men are allowed whole fantasy life's with women that don't even like them? Do men ever forget? It is so weird. Both of my exes tried so so hard to get me back. One of them was still messaging me asking if I ever think about him long after he was with a new girlfriend. Another one proposed to me on the phone, trying to get me back. I laughed and said no of course. And later I found out he was in the middle of setting up an arranged marriage from his country and to be engaged formally at the time that he proposed me and spent so much energy messaging me, calling me everywhere. Those poor women they were with didn’t matter to them. And they treated me badly when we were together. That is the weirdest part. They both only stopped trying to get in touch with me after I made my new relationship and engagement public, got married.
