Like that time a guy invited me out for drinks (I no longer accept drink dates) so I ate beforehand. I show up and he's seated at a table at the restaurant rather than the bar. He insists he's "starving" so I tell him if he'd like to order a pizza, I'll have a slice so he doesn't feel awkward. Then he asks me to split the bill.

This reminds me of a time... when I was 21 and my ex at the time was 20. I was in university and he wasn't so I had a lot of bills to pay and he didn't. He said for our 1 year anniversary, it would be really cool if we got matching macbook pros. I said okay and saved up for 4 months working part time during my schooling. Comes the day to buy the macbooks, we go to the apple store and I'm ready. I saved up, I increased my pay limit on my card. We pick our computers and go to the cash. I pay mine for 1750$ CAD. Comes his turn, we are AT THE CASH, and he looks at me and says " I only have 1000, can you pay the difference? I would do it for you if roles were reversed and I had money."

I'm ashamed to say that I paid it and then SAID NOTHING. I resented him for it cause it was a trap and I fell for it and he NEVER paid me back. In my head, the hypothetical situation he talked about shamed me into paying for him cause "how dare I say no" when he would "have done the same?".

This was 9 years ago and I'm still PISSED about this. He called me from a blocked number recently after 7 years of no contact. It reminded me of my anger and I sent him an e-transfer request to pay me back what he owes me. (I also paid for his schooling and he never fully paid me back and owes me another 2K). I cringe everytime I think about it. He has yet to answer my e-transfer request but after FDS, I'm not a doormat anymore and I know my worth. So, if he does not pay me back, I'll call his momma (who LOVED ME and is a woamn of God) and she will be ashamed of her son. Even if he doesn't pay me back, his mother will know what kind of boy he is.

Sorry...I'm Canadian and splitting down the middle is just not a thing I've EVER been offered at a restaurant here.

The bill usually comes on one peice of paper here, but split between meal 1, meal 2, etc.

That way when the server comes with the machine you can pay all together or separate. Worst case is its not split so you and your girls have to do the math.

I think it's abusive and negligent of a server to EVEN SUGGEST down the middle when one person obviously had more. Like, the fuck?

Secondly, this lady needs a backbone. I 100% would have said no I'll pay for only my own and the loser I went out with can top up his cheque. She could have avoided the car walk and everything else if she'd dealt with it immediately.

Hopefully she doesn't make the same mistake again. But she's clearly still a pickme on her way to enlightenment.

My gears are turning, wondering how that first date went. She said she always offers to pay for what she ordered, so I do wonder if she offered / insisted on paying for her own coffee or just splitting the coffee tab on the first date, and his mind went...we've got a live one boys! and was so confident to speak up for her on this date, assuming she would be a-okay with it.

Even though she subsidized his meal, him only paying for a portion of his meal probably broke his bank account, and thats why he was suggesting free dates for their next one.

Also, this is such a huge difference between men and women, that Ive seen play out many times with this whole dutch thing. I was taught the man pays for dates, and was also taught to be courteous about it. While looking at the menu, I ask what looks interesting to him, or what he thinks he'll get, so I can make sure whatever I order is within the same price range. If he only orders one glass of wine, I keep mine to one too. Its decent courtesy to be aware of. But with guys, all the time I hear of them basically ordering surf and turn with tons of drinks while shes having like, a salad and one glass of wine and then he considers it fair to split 50/50.

Yet...we're the gold diggers using men for food. I just cant.

Anyway, this is why you set the tone from the get go. I pay when Im out with friends...if he expects me to pay, then I have my idea of how he sees me and there wont be a date two. And this would not have happened.

If a coworker likes you (still don't date within companies), he should ask you out on a REAL date instead of cloaking a normal outing as a date.

I went on a first date with someone a few months ago (before I found FDS). I always offered to pay for my share of dinner but accepted when the man offered to pay for me - and the man always paid on previous dates. The check came and the waitress asks if we want one check or two and my date answers, “two checks,” then says something like, “it’s a new world.” Uh huh. He walked me to my car and asked to kiss me (at least he asked) and I declined. Blocked him when I got home.

There were a lot of other reasons for blocking him, too. He lived with his mother, and not in a “my mom needs care” type of way (he was in his 40’s, as am I). If I recall correctly, his building was bought by new owners and they evicted everyone and then the pandemic hit and he couldn’t get an apartment (which could be true, there were a few months were everything was shut down) so he moved in with his mom. It wasn’t long after his teenage son passed away and he was a mess (also understandable) so I can see why moving in with his mom was the best option for a temporary solution. But he was living on his mom’s couch in a one bedroom apartment for a year and just then “thinking about” getting his own place. He was employed at a decent job (assuming he was telling the truth), but it didn’t all quite make sense that a year out he was still couch surfing at his mom’s place. And voluntarily sharing this info with me!

Other issues included that his teenage son died of an overdose and his son’s girlfriend, who was underage, was living with them at the time because he was the girl’s guardian. That whole situation seemed off. I felt really badly for him over losing his son; my oldest kid is about a year younger than his son was and I could see that as a huge trigger for him.

I was also sitting there thinking that this man needs grief therapy, that he is is going to want help moving/decorating (assuming he actually gets his own place), and that until then, he wouldn’t have a place for us to be alone. Oh, and he also mentioned he was on the autism spectrum. And he was shorter than me.

He really seemed like a nice guy but he had so many things going on, and when he didn’t even offer to pay for my meal I knew I was done with him.

my former friend would do this order a ton of food and drinks and I would order modestly, having a much smaller bill than her. she would try to pull this on the waiters as well, you have to speak up for yourself and dont be afraid to talk over them. interrupt them and say "separate checks".

if that doesn't work or you dont like making a scene just pay your meal in cash and leave some extra for the tip, but please get up and hand it to the server if you see them. LVMs and other people would swipe cash off the tables in my hometown. I want to make sure the server gets their tip and im not sticking the restaurant for my order. if you are getting up and going you can also hand you cash to the front desk where you come in, if you cant find the server or are just in a hurry.

Sometimes I say that imma pay for myself and really try to initiate it to see how the guy will react. If he's like great np, I'm like 👋🏻

Most of the time they don't even make it a discussion and pay for everything, saying that "next time" I'll pay (obv I dont)..... thats y I really appreciate russian men. At least most of them wouldn't do this split the bill shit. Obv they got many other issues but this shit, as described in the post, aint a thing.

Point is - always look at their reaction. It will tell u a lot and u will know straight away if there will be another date or if it will be another contact on ur phone which u keep just to know to ignore this person.

Also, never in my life have I split the bill 50/50. Even with friends. We always pay for what we got. Maybe only when we ordered exactly the same things so it makes sense to split. But 50/50 is a scam all around. Ditch that shit.
