And furthermore what does single even mean anymore? Marriage is on the decline but that doesn't necessarily mean relationships are. Ricky Gervais's girlfriend has been with him since 1981 and has spent that entire time technically single.

The only place this shows up is in birthrates since these women tend to not have kids, especially more than 1.

I think it comes down to this... Men have higher sex drives and the range of women that men find attractive is greater than the range of men that women find attractive.

Women overwhelmingly find the same foundational physical qualities attractive which results in the subset of men who possess those qualities having an abundance of options. Having said that, we just don't have to get married anymore, being single is okay. From one hand, it's become far harder to fulfil a provider's role, from the other, more women want not just a spouse, but a good and close friend, a great lover and a faithful reliable partner in one person. The bar's got higher in regards of connection and "soft" benefits and for some men it might even harder to overcome than income levels.

They are just going through the phases of grief involved in giving up on men altogether. It pretty routinely happens (and had I think always happened) at a certain time in women's lives. It happens in relationships too and because it looks different then because it is reflecting off a different context people are tempted to see it as a different thing with a different cause...but nah same thing. Anger, bargaining, denial, depression, round in round in circles for a bit then finally acceptance...men are garbage and all life decisions must be taken with that as the context.

Why is the focus on women? Given the roughly even splits of men and women in this country, the statistics must be comparable for men. Given it has traditionally been the man’s responsibility to propose marriage, why is the question focused on women?

The short answer is that in a world where women no longer need to rely on a man’s income for survival, where men no longer need marriage to have sex, and children aren’t needed to help on the farm or whatever, marriage is increasingly viewed as unnecessary for a lot of highly educated urban dwellers. It should be no surprise that marriage rates decline without those pressures.

I love this debate, and here’s my 2 cents… I’m a single attractive woman and have been on dating apps for 2 years…. There are no men 30+…. I’m still looking…. Why? Are you using TikTok and instagram as your sample size for people complaining? How can you choose to be something and then complain about it, doesn’t that not really make it a choice anymore? I know plenty of single women around my age (26) and I don’t know many that complain. There’s a reason women are not being as committed (as a woman my comment is from that perspective since I’m not a man) some are now choosing to focus more on careers or other endeavours. I get plenty of offers, but I’m really enjoying my solitude and focusing on myself and things I want to achieve.

There’s also less stigma with divorce or leaving your partner. In my culture (even if you live in a first world country) women would endure a lot of verbal and physical abuse that in this current day and age they don’t need to anymore. Even 20 years ago there was a heavy stigma that isn’t as present today. Coupled with the fact women and men are dating longer and not having kids as young.

Also how do you count what is “single” - people have situations now that are more complicated. FWB, casual dating etc. it’s not as cut and dry as it used to be.

First thing, is the census either "married" or "single"? The reason why I ask this is because there are lots of people who are in committed relationships, who have chosen not to get married. I myself am in a long term relationship but we're not married. We've been together for 5 years, we're committed to each other, but actually getting married hasn't really been a priority for us. Unfortunately in my country, the census doesn't have an option for "unmarried but in a long term relationship". So according to the most recent census, I'm single.

Secondly, people don't need to be in a relationship anymore. In days gone past, both women and men needed to be in a relationship. You had to have children, either to help on the farm or because you'd be looked down on socially if you didn't. Nowadays people don't need to have children to help with work and it's more socially acceptable not to have them. Women needed men because the kind of work women were allowed to do was limited. They needed a men for financial security. Men needed women because they weren't taught how to cook, clean, look after kids, etc. They needed women to keep the house and raise the children.

Finally, it's more socially acceptable to not get married. In the past getting married was basically a mandatory life stage. If you were well to do then your family would almost certainly arrange a marriage for you. Even if you were poor marriage wasn't all about love. It was about finding security and someone who you could have children with. Times have changed since then. Ideas around marriage have changed.

Let's say, for argument's sake, that there really are countless women crying that they will be alone.

And let's say that all women are ranked according to level of attractiveness from 1-10.

And let's acknowledge that men want to settle down with attractive women, and women want to settle down with men who treat them well (casual sex rules not applying here).

Women Reddit men says "women," they are only talking about the women who rank 8-10. Those are the only ones that exist to them. They think everyone else is unattractive because they don't realize that the attractiveness of an average women is 5.5. Average women are unattractive to men who are poorly socialized because they don't know what women look like in real life, and men treat women VERY poorly when they don't find her attractive.

When women say "men," what they mean is "men who don't post on pill subs on reddit, don't wet their pants when it's time to make a phone call, and knows how to apologize and move on instead of choose their ego over me." Women do not even see passive men AS men.

The 8-10 women are not complaining they can't find anyone. They complain about low quality attention. I have a hypothesis: I believe women are choosing more to stay single because as they date more and more men they get more and more dissatisfied with each one - perpetually seeking "the better man" until they ultimately price themselves out of the dating pool because they are no longer capable of feeling satisfaction with any man.

I believe the Red Pillers may be on to something here when they say that the more men a woman dates/fucks the more she wears down her capacity for relationships. At first I was calling BS but now that I got a little more experience in dating I just have to agree. The women who I go out with who have been with a ton of guys before me are very fun and very likeable girls but they just do not want to be tied down. I do not get a sense from them that they can or even want to grow attached to a man, to settle down and call off the party.

These girls are so used to escalating and always finding a better man that gradually they find themselves feeling that there are no more good men! Why? Well because they have tried them all! They've reached the mountain top! That's it, finished, no more left to climb and since climbing is all that they learned to feel any sort of attraction for they start to get restless and bitter because a lot of times by the time a woman reaches the mountain top she has already run her best years and they are now behind her. There is nowhere else left to go but down and she will resent it as well as resent any man that she feels she has had to "settle" for.

It is not the case that women are turning down relationships with all men, they are just turning down relationships with the majority of men. Thus it is a minority of men who are doing all the sex with the most number of women.

Ever notice how when women complain about men they always appear to be complaining about the same guy? That's actually because in a creepy way they are all actually complaining about the same guy that smashed all of them and they don't seem to be aware of this! There are entirely different dynamics at play here. Being single vs being in a relationship is just a statistic. How about being single and in some weird pseudo relationship vs being single and alone because you can't find anybody vs being single because you want to be alone?

All of these single existences are much more common and have become much more accepted. There are people who don't want to be in relationships, some having been "cured" by bad experiences. Others want a relationship but cannot find one due to their own high standards. And then there's the ones who are living successfully as singles, going through dates they get from apps every week.

For women, single lifestyle and dating apps can be an absolute gold mine if they're attractive enough. Nothing easier than meeting somebody new for a quick thing every week. These women probably end up wanting a relationship but failing to get one due to high standards.

We've moved towards online dating and all of the services of online dating are looks based, so the women that aren't primarily looks based (because everyone is at least a little bit) need to try and find a partner on a medium where they don't get enough information or they need to go offline in a world where offline is becoming increasingly more difficult.

And people...when getting the choice between extremely difficult or nearly impossible, don't keep doing that. They try 1 year, 2 years, ..., but eventually they quit.

Edit to add: online dating has also caused dating to go a lot faster. If you are not kissing someone after the 2nd date, 3rd date max, in most cases you are getting dropped because other people are even fucking on the first date and it's seen as a lack of interest/attraction. And it's either adjust or you can't date. And if you can't adjust...then you are either gonna do shit you don't want or quit dating and this generation doesn't play around with doing shit they don't want for male enjoyment.

Dating has moved a lot towards furfilling the male perspective of how dating should be, but suprise!, modeling dating towards men doesn't actually turn dating into a dream for men. Especially considering that women are typically dating-avoident as fuck. Give them enough road blocks and they drop off and cause competition to sky rocket.

This is not a new phenomenon- it’s always been known in the scientific community that women marry across and up social hierarchies and men marry down : the concept even has its own name “hypergamy” - whilst women are defensive about this they can’t be blamed - we wouldn’t have survived as a species if women mated with the weakest, sickliest instead of strongest healthiest providers and as with many of these debates biology rather than socialisation is a factor.

It’s become parlance now for women to “not settle” “go girl” and to promote a sort of extreme entitlement and false status when it comes to both career and relationships. For young men the results are tangible: if they are not on top of studies / career / self care / fitness they don’t get girl friends. Conversely any below average female can get a guy at least for the night given the level of thirst. In certain circumstances even high ranking / successful men reach down. This is I believe a red pill concept known as “the Alpha Widow” where women who have had that type of guy even for a moment find it impossible to settle then. The consequences of being overly picky don’t become evident to women until the options just run out. A more recent trend - I would say in the last 20 years - is the mass producing of university degrees and the sort of promise of social prestige and career that comes with that is a bait that is bitten by a majority of women without realising they have themselves fallen into a capitalist trap which offered a grossly overpriced product which has lost its gloss and prestige (given the abundance) but again they seem non the wiser on this until it is too late - women with degrees would now appear to insist upon a partner as educated as them or higher so a recent sociology graduate whose job marketability does not extend far past McDonalds will still turn her nose up at even high paid blue collar tradesmen.

This is easy. It’s due to unchecked, runaway hypergamy. Throughout human history, there were social checks and balances put on hypergamy. Now, thanks to decades of feminism, these checks and balances have been eroded and now it’s unbounded hypergamy. The average woman is no longer attracted to the average man, and most women only lust after a tinier and tinier percentage of males. Any males outside of that top 5% to 10% are not considered “men” by an increasing number of women. That’s why they’re complaining that they can’t find “men”. Hypergamy is now unbounded and they’ve priced themselves out of the market for love and commitment. They can still get dick though.

Nowadays, due to feminist politics, women are doing better and men are doing worse. A lot of previously decent men just look like losers to women now.

Hook up culture made it look like they all could be 'dating' Chad. You can have sex with Chad but he's not dating every girl.

Many men are fine being miserable with their video games and Netflix, not much worse than dealing with a 'modern woman' in a relationship. Many women are fine being miserable with their social media and Netflix, not much worse than dealing with a 'manchild'.

Low wages, long work hours, unemployment and expensive rents (at least in many countries), people can't really afford certain steps of relationships like having children or a stable marriage. This is not a direct cause, but I think that many people (women included) struggle in the dating/relationships world for these reasons too.

Women date up. the dual female sexual strategy is alpha seed, beta need $. Ideally both in one. What happens in unregulated dating markets is that women only see and date the stop tier men. Obviously no supply and demand logic is present (very few high value men exist). So when most men at any given time t arrive at the dating market, they don’t want hoez = population falls, civilization gets destroyed. Monogamy buffered the dual male sexual strategy (a woman who he loves etc and still banging others), and shame etc acted as a buffer against the dual female sexual strategy. It seems like a lot of women nowadays don't emotionally mature - in interacting with men they find attractive - past the toddler stage.

Several women in my family wanted to have a relationship, etc, but then always found that if they saw a guy they thought was attractive but he had any of those bonding/attachment/relationship qualities at all, she's be scared to talk to him and run away. I've seen the reaction, it's like a child who's parents had a person they didn't know come over and they're scared of the new person.

I think in typical scenario what happens is that the larger social group would cause you to interact with the person until one day you're comfortable with them, but everything is so socially isolated nowadays it doesn't happen, and they end up in their late 20's and 30's going "what happened? what do you mean running away from guys I like isn't going to work? that's what I want to dooooo!".

What happened in both cases is they got their parents to push them to date. Like...that's what they needed...the authority figure in their life to validate their desire to date and pressure them to do it.

One of them seems very happy with the guy she's with. The other it's a more a mixed bag but those seem to be her issues - her husband is a good guy, they have a kid, he makes a lot more money than I do, and she used to make substinence wages at her job and got hit with a bunch of health issues which she doesn't have to worry about as much because her husband is paying her bills. Her main complaint seems to be that her husband spends to much time at work, which you know, is what happens when you insist on a guy that makes a fair amount of money.

I think this obsession with socially awkward men is because women are now very socially awkward. We grow up socially isolated, technology plays a part in stunting emotional maturity, and our society trains us to be worker bees that don't attach to other people.

It's not just a matter that the women don't "choose" to marry, it's a back and forth between emotionally immature women who push away emotionally mature men - who then never mature because you need interactions to mature in something - "everyone's amazing and no one is happy".

Its not that hard to understand. When a woman says she can't find a "man", you have to realize she's not speaking about simply all human males. An important thing to remember is that when it comes to dating, women view a very significant portion of men (generally 75-80%) as not being human beings. So you've got 100% of women going after approximately 20% of men. And the numbers don't add up when you consider that. Either those women have to share a man with several other women, or get no man at all.

With very rare exception (ex. women with extreme disabilities) any woman who complains about not being able to find a man has had numerous opportunities.

"Oh, John? Well he was nice, but he was only 5 feet 11, not 6 feet."

"Fred? There was that one date where he wanted to split the bill with me..."

"Harold? Yeah, sure, he proposed to me, but he only makes $98,000 a year. I want six figures."

No the ratio isn't 1:1. And even if you had 10 women on the west coast, 10 men on the east coast, ratio alone doesn't tell the whole story. You need reasonable proximity.

Yes women complain/whine. A lot. But read between the lines, the single men don't measure up to a lot of single women's eyes. According to them, there can be a billion single men near them but it won't matter if she doesn't see them as options. Combine that with what you said that women depend less on a singular man for things like wealth, security, companionship and is it really surprising that few people are marrying?

And that's not considering the fact that marriage opens people up to all kinds of potentially devastating lifelong financial/emotional disasters ... it has incredible risk. And for what upside, exactly?
