I’m curious how the hell she doesn’t see the hypocrisy just in saying these out loud for the world. She doesn’t want just a “masculine” man, she specifies that she wants a man playing a more traditional masculine gender role, who wants to provide for her. At the same time she doesn’t want to play female traditional gender role and it’s just…very curious and I’d say it’s hypocritical. I guess at least she realizes that there aren’t a lot of men like that and there’s a certain conflict between her values and preferences.

Haven’t read comments, but I think what you’re describing in the first paragraph is a capable and mature man. Not necessarily traditionally masculine. There’s a certain lack of people possessing these qualities overall so it makes sense that it can be hard to find one.

On a personal note, my husband and I are egalitarian and we have egalitarian marriage. He has a rather traditional upbringing and I’d say he has some benevolently sexist beliefs about women and he prefers to perform a lot of “chivalrous” little cutesy things like opening the doors, not letting me carry heavy things, giving me his jacket etc. I appreciate it as I think it’s just his way to show he cares for me. The inner dynamic is egalitarian though and we agree on most political things, at least the core ones. We make decisions together and currently we have pretty much invested labor division, i.e. I pay our bills and he does chores and cooking. Basically we’re both liberals and we don’t tie ourselves to gender roles, but he likes doing acts that men here call chivalrous.

Based on my dating experience as a guy this is part of a larger modern problem. Women want to be free of their antiquated gender norms but still apply the protector-provider norm to men. Many women absolutely will not date a guy that’s shorter, less ambitious, or lower-attaining. The women that will date a man with one of those will try to compensate by compromising another e.g. dating a super physically masculine less-attaining guy, or dating a taller sweet/caring guy.

I try my hardest to avoid people that are polarized to the right or the left. If someone identifies as a liberal or a conservative, I know that we have ZERO compatibility at all romantically. I find both groups to lack in shared values, opinions, or beliefs.

From the US, I have noticed that (R) girls are outwardly portray as being such a "boss bitch" and being independently financially secure, and being brash and annoying but in the bedroom... are really sweet and submissive.

I remember one first date I went on with a catholic vegetarian.

I was raised in a very conservative culture but I'd describe myself as a moderate who would be/wants to be a liberal if they weren't so batshit crazy in certain regards.

Location plays a giant role. I was raised in and lived in the reddest of the red places. My whole family & community consisted of ultra conservative Republicans and the men there were overwhelmingly the breadwinners and acted as absolute rulers in their homes. The women were mostly silent/stoic. At best wives had a 50/50 chance of their husband cheating on them, better odds than that he’d be an alcoholic & an abusive asshole.

I couldn’t wait to get out of there so I could date saner, less indoctrinated from birth & yes more liberal men. I never found my less conservative choices to be less masculine. I didn’t want a dictator or someone to pay for me, I wanted a collaborator.

I ended up moving back there to take care of my aging parents mid life and was single for a short time after a divorce. There was no way I would have even looked around for a man in that environment. I had to import my current partner in all the way in from Manhattan.

If this woman wants that, rural Appalachia might be her perfect place to find it.

She is not wrong. To be conservative implies a man has something to fight for, something to work for, something to die for. Whether it be family, faith, fealty, or fundamentals. A man very quickly turns from Liberal to Conservative as soon as he has something in his life that he fiercely protects.

Such men are not just blind revolutionaries, or hyped up "warriors" looking for a fight. These men have something that is very valuable to them in their life; and they will do anything possible to protect it and conserve it, hence where the name comes from.

They want to build the structures that will be conducive towards conserving and protecting that which they value which is usually family, wife, neighborhood, values, stability, finances, kids, infrastructure, job security, etc. Conservatives get a lot of shit because they are usually not very good at articulating what they are doing but at heart this is the core of what they are. My first two serious relationships were with more conservative men. First one I knew we had a disconnect but I didn't completely put my finger on what it was because we didn't discuss politics all that much. The second one I really liked his personality, but every time he discussed his political views I mentally just looked down on him. I wanted to apologize for shit he said as if i was responsible for his ignorance. Then I finally realized that agreeing on politics was a big deal if I want to respect my partner as a person, dating life improved 10 fold when i held out for liberal men. I think I'm pretty squarely in the middle as a moderate, but I end up dating liberal women (because it does seem like that's all there is). My perspective:

Liberalism hates masculinity. Essentially they've created this narrative that gender roles are bad yet I see TONS of liberal women who want me to pay for the date, open the door for them, be masculine in tone, etc. You are giving mixed messages to men.
I acknowledge that liberal men are probably more beta on average. I mean you can't go "it's ok to be a beta" and then expect alpha male traits.

My man is left wing yet “masculine” he works hard as a professional, earns a good living, and is more family oriented, he even prefers the idea of me being a housewife (I’m not so sure if I want that though). He considers himself like Obama. The only thing is he isn’t so much a handyman, nor is he athletic or into sports. He’s more of an intellectual, he’s intelligent, a writer and a history buff, his masculine interests are things like WWII history not football games.

The way I see it there are different archetypes of masculinity it’s not one size fits all. A man who is handy, does physical labor, loves beer and sports is one archetype. A business man who wears suits to work is another archetype. Left wing guys are still very much influenced by the social conditioning that encourages masculine conformity. There are conservative guys who are so “nice” they almost seem gay (ever met a Mormon dude?) and some very aggressive left wing dudes like the gun toting ANTIFA guys. he wasn't taught that it was a man's job to do so.
the woman doesn't financially need him to.
the woman doesn't inspire any natural instincts to support her by behaving traditionally. (i e. is an independent girlboss)

? Remove those factors and he's basically just doing it so he doesn't get ghosted, which still might happen regardless (free meal dating), so it's hard to be enthusiastic about it.

Hm. She’s looking for a man who shares her belief in certain traditional gender roles but not others - a set of beliefs that would have been easier to find in the mainstream 40-50 years ago. I’m sure she’s not wrong that these guys are fewer and farther between now, as the social milieu and the political spectrum have both undergone significant shifts. I’m curious about her specific political beliefs but suspect they are much more moderate than the average stereotypical ‘liberal woman.’

Is she a hypocrite? Perhaps. On the other hand there have been many older men in my acquaintance who preferred traditional gender roles and relationship dynamics but also were generally in favor of second-wave feminism, unions, etc, so I’m not sure that hypocrisy is the best descriptor either.

Is this a widespread problem? I don’t know. In the past I think women who wanted this gender dynamic would have ended up dating and marrying conservative men with whom they shared social values, and had tacit agreements to not engage on politics, but the political environment has become more vicious and polarized in the last fifteen years so that probably seems increasingly not like a viable option.

I consider myself a masculine liberal in that I support all rights for people to live their lives however they want, however they identify, however I personally was raised in a household where my father did the traditional stoic bread winning role and I seek to emulate this role as a stable provider for my own family. I agree with others that she’s conflating ‘masculinity’ with things that benefit her directly. It could be described as courtesy or traditional but ‘masculine’ is just a way to name shame because clearly it’s derogatory and she would rather dodge having to explain why her preferences exist. After all, who would question wanting to avoid a feminine man? But putting out there that you 100% insist men pay starting from the first day? That might get her own circle to pounce on her.

I do agree that male conservative would be a better match for her because liberals like her espouse that men and women are equal. If the relationship is 50/50 and it’s just a first date then why should he pay for things right off that bat? Because it’s a test of his masculinity? So she wants to avoid ‘compromising her values’ by dating a liberal but also wants someone who is ‘masculine’ enough to act like a conservative man. What a nut case!
