The 2016 election is probably the best metaphor for the whole dynamic. Hillary Clinton relied on celebrity endorsements at a rally held maybe once a week, ignored a lot of key states and assumed they'd support her just because, cheated Bernie with superdelegates then flaunted support he was basically forced to give during the debates, and gave a general impression that she had a right to win because the establishment supported her and that was that. Donald Trump at his peak held multiple rallies per day, had a catchy answer to key questions(if not always accurate and rarely acted on), was a dark horse who beat like a dozen other candidares to get the nomination with no superdelegates, and was seen on camera personally handing out emergency supplies.

To be clear, Donald Trump is a bullshitter in the same sense most manosphere gurus are but thats because he was capable of actually addressing peoples deep seared problems and insecurities and outlining solutions to them that he was seen at least trying to push. The solutions are rarely that great but the alternatives offered usually amount to "kick rocks and hope you get thrown a bone if I feel like it".

The deal the right offers is pretty clear cut: stay in your cultural role and you'll get social and economic rewards. The deal the left offers young men is, by comparison, that they should take a lot of social and financial risks with zero guarantees simply because its the morally correct thing to do, even if you won't gain much out of it and the people who will won't aknowledge it.

As a center-leaning leftist man, I'll tell you what I've observed that might be contributing. A lot of "leftist" (and I use that term loosely) rhetoric has been all about shaming people for shit their ancestors did, or blaming everyday people for shit like "the patriarchy," which is such a nebulous fucking concept you can apply it to anything you want if you try hard enough, and the shutting-down of debate.

I can't tell you how many times I've seen people get shouted down or completely ignored just for suggesting that men are in any way oppressed, or that they have their own serious problems to wrestle with. It's always the struggle olympics with people these days, and the ironic thing is most of the people saying such shit are extremely privileged middle-class white people.

I'm a white dude who has seen more struggle than many of those folks, who grew up alongside some diverse crowds, and who himself is leftist, but god forbid I say that most men aren't rapists, or that men aren't necessarily violent. If you switch their own rhetoric and replace "men" with a race to show them the hypocrisy, they say you're racist rather than face the fact that they are, in fact, discriminating.

Sexism is real, and it's present in today's society. That doesn't mean "men" are sexist, it means there are men (and women) out there who are sexist. But people are so fucking myopic they only understand things when they're broken down to sweeping generalizations and emotionally-charged language.

Some people fall prey to the bullshit identity-politics peddled by leftists, while some people fall prey to the bullshit identity-politics peddled by righties, and they're both fucking up by doing so.

Just so happens the right treats men more like people and the left treats women more like people. Boggles my mind that more people don't see it. Everybody's people. People need to figure it the fuck out.

This is entirely anecdotal, but I think it has to do with the humanities department at Universities - I myself am a liberal, and was still shocked at how extreme some of these professors are in their beliefs.

Teachers do make an effort to remove their biases when teaching courses, they are academics at the end of the day, but how they present information to the class, and what information they present to the class leads students to what feels like, a predetermined conclusion.

We know that women tend to be more interested in these things, so even if both men and women were enrolled in similar rates, I think we'd probably still see women become more left leaning as a result of how those courses are taught.

Political science and a few other humanities are actually not bad, even if slightly biased - the REAL brainwashing goes on in sociology, that pipeline is something else

I think the reason men are so vehemently running toward the right though is due to being sold a lie from the left. Especially with my generation (Millennials) and Zoomers, men were often raised a certain way, were told to look at the world through a new and modern lens, but when operating in that sphere men are often discarded. When looking at the left, men feel lied to and betrayed, and when they voice this concern, they are told to shut up and get over it, that their problems are insignificant, and that others have it worse. They are preached about their "privilege" even when in trying times. At least the right doesn't lie to men: they flat out tell them life sucks, but tell them they can better their lot by hard work. When given the two choices, men, especially jaded men, will likely lean right when given the option.

Speaking as a man in college, there just seems to be a cultural hostility toward men that drive them away from left-leaning politics. Any issues on gender are presented as "you are the oppressor, do the morally right x thing, and suck up any issues you have on your own".

As for issues other than gender, I think that right-leaning politics in general is more in line with the stereotypical male character, emphasizing individualism while protecting social values the men may hold dear.

There are 2 major factors.

As everyone has pointed out, 'the left' is very hostile towards men, especially white men.
Their choice of majors. Women are more likely to take 'softer' majors while men tend towards more technical and scientific majors as well as business.

As a woman college student who has actually shifted slightly right, I definitely find it interesting.

I think most college campuses encourage liberal ideas, more sexual freedom, and feminism which appeal to women.

I think some men feel comfortable with more conservative/ right leaning ideals because men have more power there. Also some modern feminists are quite anti men/masculinity which is of course a turn off for men.

I don’t think it’s so much that the college experience itself is making men shift right but mens frustration for what college does for women that is.

Over all I think women have finally started to develop the skills to grow enough mentally to not just survive but thrive on their own and this stresses the men who seem to fear being alone or never having offspring. Men want what their fathers and especially grandfathers had and women want to avoid the fate most of their mothers and grandmothers suffered through.

Combine this with men’s higher sex drive/ testosterone levels and men are struggling more with anger and depression as a result. So men seek answers to their problems and find that the news/ political parties, company’s like OLD and entrepreneurs on YouTube are offering them their dream results if they vote a specific way, spend money on their product or buy their books/ seminars.

This is leading to not so much a shift in politics but a divide in moral values that are pushing the sexes apart. Men are trying to force women back into their old roles and women are trying to escape them which leads us back to women raising their mental skills by both gaining the knowledge to get a career as well as the practice of living alone both of which start happening around college.

I can only speak from personal experience as someone who migrated from the radical left towards libertarianism (I still hold egalitarian values).

For me it had everything to do with personal experiences within the left. In my experience many people on the left are very envious and lazy people that would probably make the world worse if they themselves were in power. Also a lot of them have psychological struggles that they project unto society (or blame society for).

When it comes to the topic of gender I also noticed many double standards: Women claiming they value feminist values in men, yet dating the most toxic men. Men denouncing toxic masculinity, yet being toxic themselves (and getting rewarded for it). Women demanding that more women should get STEM degrees, yet enrolling in humanities themselves. Men proclaiming "fat is beautiful", yet only dating skinny white girls. And I could name so many more things..

So yeah, I just made bad experiences with leftism. It seems like a web of lies to me.

In America specifically (because its not the same in Europe) the right is steeped in conservatism and traditionalism, and particularly belief (religion) over the pursuit of knowledge, is skeptical, often hostile to science.

This doesn't mesh well with higher education, there will be some natural filtering because of that. Even lower education in the US republican states is more restrictive in teaching because...

Science adjusts its views based on what's observed. Faith is the denial of observation so that belief can be preserved.

I think this is more an American issue really. I often wonder if there is some link to early settlers in America a good degree of which were religious fundamentalists who left their European countries of origin. They brought with them often archaic views about women, even for that time and a deep feeling of paranoia and defensiveness. I think these same issues still have a stranglehold on American culture to this day.

I'm British and a shared language and the influence of American pop culture often makes one assume the US is similar to a Western European country but in reality its a very different beast and often not in a good way.

The thing I don’t like about this survey is they surveyed 1500 students… at the end of summer break. I’d like to see a survey of 5k students at the beginning of a fall term.

I work at one of the top 25 institutions. What I know is women are, and have been, graduating at much higher rates than men. We have committees, work groups, and positions 100% dedicated to male student success in an effort to close the gender gap. And I’ll have to double check, but I believe we’ve increasingly seen more women applications than men in the past. I say “in the past” because it’s not as accurate now - a number of people do not indicate their gender and I believe there is talk of either removing it OR allowing one to enter the gender they identify as… it’s going to be more difficult to measure is what I mean.

As for the number of registered student voters, we have student ran political clubs (on both the left and the right) who have voter applications and will park out in front of places like the Library and Student Services building each semester and encourage students to register to vote. If a student is not registered, they will ask if they can help them fill out an application.

I think the change students seek - is to undo this hate and division sewn so deeply into our country. They want to see our leaders work together for the good of our country and actually implement change instead of bickering over BS and spinning wheels.

Why? For men going more to the right (in the US) I think it's relatively simple: 1) Insufficient examples left-leaning men with attractive lifestyles and 2) a constant critiquing of everyone on the left by everyone on the left (and right) making for something of a unattractive "crabs and a bucket" scene. Bottom line, what Bill Clinton said 20+yrs ago still holds - most people choose to support someone who appears strong but wrong than someone who is weak but right. Perception really hits the reptilian part of our brain pretty effectively.

I think women tend to be left-wing in general and men tend to be right-wing in general for a few reasons: 1. Women tend to be more emotional and compassionate than men. 2. Men tend to make more money. 3. Feminism is traditionally on the left, which polarizes the genders.

I think college accelerates this for a few reasons: 1. As people become more educated, they better understand what their own interests are. 2. Since colleges tend to be extremely left, women are radicalized by college while men tend to feel attacked and become reactionary. 3. Men who don’t go to college tend to make less money, and thus left-wing politics are more in their interest.

People just pick what benefits them. Wokeness benefits women more than men. The only time they deviate is on the transgender issue when women actually lose out by wokeness policies (college sports). But for the most part they will go with the ideology that says they deserve the same pay as male pro athletes despite vastly lower revenues and the same representation as male corporate leaders despite vastly lower rates of participation in the pipeline. Why the heck not?

Case in point: I'm an asian man. If there was an ideology that said "Hey, asian men are treated unfairly by affirmative action and lower representation in upper-leadership. Let's make quotas for asian men and shame people into promoting you." Yes, I would back that political party. I'm just being honest.

Everything looked mostly normal (conservatives hated it, liberals loved it, older people liked it more than younger people) except for male liberals. They disliked feminism about 3/4 as much as male conservatives did.

Oh boy. Sort of funny for me because this pill shit is the only thing I swing more conservative (TRP) on. Probably because of personal experience, but honestly a lot of redpill and even some blackpill stuff about women is true to me (AF/BB, men must become, women just are, promiscuity being bad for commitment and more). Outside of that, I'm more progressive (well, by America's standards) on most other issues, although I dislike the virtue signaling and identity politics many "activists" try to push, and I do think black people hog up too much of the racial injustice conversation, although that isn't really conservative thought. I actually became this way more in the past few years thanks to the pandemic.

Most of what the right pushes in this country, to me, is fucking stupid: meritocracy, anti-establishment just to be anti-establishment (tbf the "left" is anti-establishment, but more because the establishment sucks at doing their job of serving the people), of course until it's someone they don't like, simping for the rich, accusing the rainbow community (too many letters at this point) of "grooming" our children, their wacky ass obsession with pedophiles, their paranoid belief of a "white man bad" culture (us white guys are still doing pretty good as far as I'm concerned), the excessive patriotism that almost no other countries in the developed world show, and many other things. But back to the OP: this does not surprise me. Being away from parents and now somewhat on your own as an adult probably enables this both ways.
