More Amy Schumer! Blames "subreddits" for her bad reviews of her Netflix Special.

I don't really give a shit either way about Schumer, but if you're calling bullshit on that statement, name the first female comedian to sell out an arena? Because I don't think she's lying. FYI, I believe arenas are considered 15,000+ people.

Comedians didn't start to sell out arenas until Eddie Murphy and Dice Clay around the late 80s to early 90s. While there are other female comedians that were more popular than Amy in their prime, I don't believe they even attempted to book stadiums/arenas. For good reason, watching comedy at a venue that big is fucking terrible. I saw Burr at MSG and it was extremely awkward.

Sarah Silverman was probably capable of it, particularly being in that Dane Cook era where he was routinely touring and selling out arenas. Roseanne may have as well, with Eddy and Dice doing it. But AFAIK, they only headlined at theaters.

Her claim might be somewhat true based just on the fact that these full blown stadium comedy shows seem to be much more of a recent phenomenon.

15 years ago, if you were a big deal in comedy, you would tour theaters with 1000-5000 seats. There were only about a dozen comedians who could pull that kind of crowd consistently on tour. Sure, there were some people doing a handful of stadium shows, but it was definitely an outlier. Even though she was a big deal, I would be surprised if Lampaneli ever did a headlining stadium tour.

Nowadays there are about a dozen comedians regularly pulling stadium audiences. Live comedy has really exploded in popularity. Almost anyone with a reasonably popular TV show can play stadiums now.

That said, many comedians still choose to play smaller venues out of preference. You have massive names like Jerry Seinfeld and Dave Chappelle who could easily fill stadiums still choosing to mostly do smaller venues.

If Amy is using "arena tours" to falsely equate success, then she's going to be outdone by better female comedians at every angle, and any age.

There's simply no evidence to support Amy's delusions to being the biggest female comedian, ever.

The fact is, she thinks she's on a crusade, she's believes she's a "leader", "powerful, dangerous and brave" and her persecution complex makes her believe she's a victim.

From journalists, to online Trolls, like Reddit, to even the "administration", "the Alt-Right", etc, she believes she's under attack, because just like the Ghostbusters movie, it's not possible the content just sucks.

Must be trolls and sexism, blah, blah, i'm awesome everyone is wrong.....

Yet, she says she's being "..effective, and brings more interests to my work and their obsession with me keeps me going".

Yeah, she's delusional, to think she's the object of people's obsession, that's she's effective....at what exactly ?

"I am strong and beautiful....i will continue to rise and fight and lead..."

She's delusional in so many ways, it's not funny, but then we can add that to the list of ways she's not funny.....

Joe Rogan (notorious for calling out joke thieves like Carlos Mencia) has been strangely silent about Amy. He has discussed it on his podcast when the first "Amy is a joke thief" video came out a year or two ago. But even then he gave a politicians response. I'm guessing this is because she was on his podcast previously, or he wanted to give her the benefit of the doubt, or he just doesn't want to cause drama anymore.

Anyways, I haven't heard any comedians on any of the podcasts I listen to call her out on it. I feel like it's because they all watched her come up and have some respect. I'm sure a lot of comedians are bothered by it but might feel like they shouldn't speak up. And in sure many female comedians are just happy a fellow female is doing so well.

Anyways, it definitely is strange how the comedy community is pretty silent about it. If anyone has any videos or tweets from comedians calling her out, I'd love to see them!

This came up on his podcast this week with Jim Norton. It comes up on his podcast semi-regularly.

He's been pretty consistent in saying he thinks that her stand-up jokes are based on premises that are very simple to come up with and that he doubts she personally is actually stealing jokes, at least not intentionally.

However, he has said he is more suspicious of the writers on her show. He does not go so far as to say that they definitely stole joke premises, but that they at the least subconsciously ripped off things they've seen.

His overall stance seems to be that she and her writers at least suffer from a lack of originality.

Recently he contrasted her show with Key and Peele's show in reference to the originality issue.

Other comedians on his show have been much more willing to imply that she outright steals jokes.

He may be trying to avoid entering another Mencia-esque situation, but he's probably just trying to remain measured, rather than joining the mob, without what he thinks is solid proof.

Success speaks for itself. same with strength. If you have to go out of your way to tell people "LOOK HOW BRAVE AND ADVENTUROUS I AM", then all you are is insecure.

A good way of telling if a comedian is good or not is if you can explain what they're talking about, and why it's funny. Kevin Hart talks about raising his kids, stories from his childhood, going to the club with his friends. Louis C.K takes a dark perspective on everyday things; using cellphones too much, being stuck in traffic, the hot girl at the club.

Alright, let's take an in-depth look at Amy Schumer's "comedy". What does she actually talk about? She just kind... of tells jokes I think? I mean, she talks about sex and relationships, but not really much else. Here's the thing though: sex+relationships is the lowest hanging fruit possible in comedy Literally every comic has material about relationships, sex, ~~identifying as straight/gay/bi/an attack helicopter~~, whatever. And not that there's anything wrong with that; hell, some comics have damn good material about those things (Patrice O'Neal comes to mind).

The thing is, if you're gonna pick the low hanging fruit, you better bring some new insight or put a interesting spin on things. If you want an example of what that looks like here's a short clip of Dan Soder talking about having a crush on someone.

Arena venues are not that, they have plenty of female acts.

Honestly i don't think so it would seem to me that the controversy about the race thing made reviewers want to jump on the hate wagon. The reviews will be bad for this series and it is a shame because nobody is really at fault for that.

The defenders are setting up to be very diverse we have a disabled character, a bad ass woman, a hard black dude with a rough upbringing and now a white guy thats not to mention the amazing support cast. At the same time I can see why having a rich white guy play a martial arts master with a thing for Asian chicks who has to save the martial arts world because none of the other Asian characters are strong enough could be problematic for some but that is the most well known version of that character.

There have been other iron fists but i edited my comment above because honestly i can see the issue with having a Rich white guy play the only martial arts expert that can save the world who also has a thing for asian chicks. That is if it was a 100% original character but it's not and Danny Rand has been the iron fist longer then anyone in comic history and is the most well known version of that character. Add to that statement that we have just had doctor strange who is again a rich white guy who joins a mystical Asian group to learn magic and becomes the only person capable of protecting the world and i can honestly see where the "White savior saves asia" shit is coming from. However these characters are steeped in lore and have had years of stories built around them i honestly believe thats why we have miles morales, lady thor, she-hulk etc taking a bit more centre stage in the comics they are building the lore so they can bring them to tv and movies.

But then if you go well he is a martial arts expert so it has to be an Asian guy right then that is racist. If it was a woman or a black dude it would be fine though and nobody would scream appropriation.

The fact is, the character itself was always a racist trope. It was an effort to tap into the Asian martial arts / kung-fu movie boom of the 70s, using a blonde white dude as the white savior character. It was pretty much the same story as that show with David Carridine, "Kung-Fu" I think.

What's lame about keeping the character the same way, is it adds nothing to story. It would have been cool if Iron Fist was Chinese American, because it would have added an entirely different layer involving the protagonist finding his roots - and his return to Western society and his rich friends after living in the mystical city of his ancestors for years. It adds another dimension to the character, and takes nothing away. Without it, they needed something else to flesh out the character, and since most of the early reviews i'm seeing say that it suffers from being bland and boring (along with poor cgi), it appears that the writers were unable to do that.

First one who comes to mind is Sam Hyde of Million Dollar Extreme. They recently had their show canceled and he was blacklisted based on claims he was alt-right. His show had better ratings than most of the Tim and Eric productions at the time. But because of the group's alternative comedy style, they were labeled alt-right (one skit even included blackface similar to RDJ). Here's an article from Polygon.

One you might be familiar with is the infamous PewDiePie "Nazi" thing that Just happened recently. He got fired from his production company for dressing up like Hitler. Wall Street Journal did a major piece on it.

The term alt-right originally started as South Park Republican, because yknow, the show South Park. you can read up on how the movement began on the history section of the alt-right wiki page. Which is where it refrences South Park. The wiki page is pretty vague and seems to be in an opinionated tone, rather than an educational one, but you can see that this is nothing new. Its literally just a word created by the internet, picked up by media to use as a buzzword.

Because of the nebulous nature of anonymous online communities, nobody's entirely sure who the alt-righters are and what motivates them. It's also unclear which among them are true believers and which are smart-ass troublemakers trying to ruffle feathers.

I think Matt Stones response to the whole thing was amazing.

Your first example (Polygon) appears to only use the term "alt-right" (in quotes) as a reference to the fact that Hyde associates with a group who refer to themselves as "alt-right". This is mentioned in the article - I am not personally familiar with the issue.

As for PewDiePie, I think that some of his acts were certainly deserving of the alt-right moniker, although I do believe these weren't representative of him overall. I do not have a subscription to wsj so I cannot read the bottom of the article. Could you quote verbatim what they claim about him being alt-right?

I agree with the rest of your view that alt-right is a broad and often vague term. I'm not sure why you feel it necessary to discuss Matt Stones' view on liberals, which has nothing to do with this conversation.

Well I don't have a subscription for WSJ either, but I have read the full article someone pasted around here. While I don't think they use the term alt-right exactly. The way they portray him as a neo-nazi, linking to a neo-nazi website claiming they are pewdiepie's #1 fan club. And showing him raising his hand up pointing, claiming he's doing a Nazi salute. (he goes through all of this in his video) Again with alt-right being so vague they may not use the term word for word but for an uninformed person to read that article, and came out of it thinking Felix was alt-right, it wouldn't be suprising. Most people don't even know what the term means as it was spawned by internet trolls.

In my mind the term alt-right is very broad and fits in with social interactions as well as political beliefs. Its used by news articles almost purely as a political thing but on internet forums it's used more colloquially. Its all bullshit and it's just a word people use when someone pokes their little bubble.

And I was refrencing Matt Stone because this has all happened before with the term "South Park Republican" all of the examples they used to describe the South Park guys, racist, homophobic, xenophobic is the same titles they use to describe the "alt-right"

Huh. You really have no idea how things work in society, do you? Male privilege is privilege because the main vein of society is tailored to them and their wants and needs. The way things are, are for men. For hundreds and thousands of years, men have used their power to ensure this. I don't need to tell you that only in the last century have women been allowed to even vote. Male privilege is leaving the house and not having to think about or navigate society in a fearful or secondary manner. You already know the norm is that everything should be relatable and enjoyable for you. Women don't get to have that, but now that it's popping up, and it's not being sensitive to the fragile masculinity of most men, they're either outraged or annoyed because they don't understand it. Thus they are legitimately confused as to how something came to be if it's not tailor made for their expectations and ways of life. Female privilege doesn't exist because we don't get to expect the world to be readily available to us. If we don't feel, at every second, desirable to men, we feel worthless. Because everywhere you look there's something to tell us we need to be more fuckable, more bearable to look at, to smile more for you, to be the complete opposite of you so you don't have to feel any competition whatsoever while you put your dick in us. I can't fathom what it's like to be a minority? See that's what pisses off most people. I grew up as a poor white kid in a town that's 80% Hispanic. I know being a minority buddy.

I worked in a computer repair shop for a small MSP once. This was my first job in my IT career, and was also shortly after Barack Obama took office for the first time. This tired rant reminds me of this one guy that came in.

He brought in 2 laptops. Explained to me that they are indentical copies of each other. He uses one until, and I quote, "Barack Obama's International Mafia, and their illegal alien prostitutes hack it and put their porn on it and expose it to viruses" in which case he brings the problematic laptop in for repair while he uses the other one... I'm assuming for more illegal alien prostitute porn.

The guy refused to leave the laptop with me, instead insisting on either coming to the back/workbench area with me, or at least standing in the lobby until they're done. I explained to him our SLAs and that his laptop had been "put in line" and would be worked on in turn. He offered to pay the express service fee, so I started working on his next. I went out to tell him I was beginning work on his laptop, he held up one finger as to say "wait a minute", opened his phone (flip phone) and walked outside. Not strange, except he didn't just walk out the door and stand on the sidewalk, he walked literally into the median of the 4 lane highway outside my shop to have his call.

Anyway, he came back in, and I was trying to get some more information about what was going on with his laptop. I asked him to explain the problem. Now, this took place in rural Alabama and that's important because the next bit really puts this guy's crazy into perspective.

He goes on, telling me about how he and his (now ex) wife lived in San Antonio Texas, and right after Obama, whom he was really really really opposed to, won the election, a group of illegal immigrants moved in across the street. He said that the men were all members of the international mafia, taking orders directly from Barack Obama, and the women were prostitutes who produced porn AND computer viruses. Once they found out that he didn't like Barry, they enacted this plot to fundamentally destruct his life. The women with their virusy porn had the men hack his PC and put it all over it and then showed it to his wife, who promptly left him... Anyway, he got another phone call, said he had to run but would be back to pick up the laptops (he left his second one there with me too at this point). And he left.

Now, the policy at this place is that we fix the PC, we notify you at certain intervals to come pick it up. But if after 90 days, you haven't responded or come and gotten them... Basically if we didn't hear from you or receive payment within 90 days of the first notice of repair, our policy was to take ownership of the PCs and 99% of the time, we would wipe them, reload an OS, and resell them. So, this guy was coming up on that time frame at this point. He had one final call before I was going to wipe them. He says "No no no, don't do that, I can't come get them, let's just say I had to leave town again" and then went on to tell me that he would have a friend come get them. Dude was being super sketch about the whole thing. I asked him for his friend's name, and he says "Oh, uh, well, let's just call him John"... "Ok, sure, does 'John' have a last name?"... "No, you don't need his last name."... "Ok, whatever dude, when will 'John' be here to pick these up?"... "Uh, I'm not sure, I'll have him coordinate with you"... "Ok, fine".

Anyway, a few more days go by and this guy calls in, sounds annoyed. Says "Hey, yeah, this guy I know <customer's name> called and asked me to come pick up his laptops. Said to tell you my name is John, but my real name is <real name>." "Ah, ok, yeah, we've been holding these laptops for a while now. They're ready to be picked up whenever, our hours are M-F 7am-7pm."... Guy says "Ok, cool, I'll head over now. Where exactly are y'all?"... "We're in <Town Name>"... "Hmm, I've never heard of that town."... This is common since we were so rural, but had surrounding areas that were a little more metropolitan, so it was common to find people who had never heard of the town. So I explain "Oh, we're across the bay, down Highway 59"... He says "59, huh, must be further than I thought. I don't know that highway"... So I say "Hmm, ok, well it's right across the street from <Town Name High School>" hoping he will just google that and find directions... Then he says "This <Town Name> it's weird I've never heard of it. What is your full address?" ... So, I tell him <Street Number><Street><Town Name>Alabama.." Before I can finish, dude loses his shit. Absolutely loses his damn mind... "ALABAMA! A-la-BAMA?! This guy has officially lost his fucking mind if he thinks I'm going to drive to ALABAMA to pick up some laptops of his. Do whatever you want with them, I'm not picking them up. He should've thought of this before he ran off to Mexico. I am NOT driving from Arizona to Alabama to get this idiot's laptops. Barely know the fucker anyway." <hangs up>...

Anyway, TL;DR - Guy dropped off his laptop, obviously had a latina porn addiction that had cost him his marriage, and he made up some conspiracy theory about an international mafia, run by Barack Obama, who was hacking "illegal immigrant prostitute porn" onto his laptop... Sort of like how Pig-face up there is accusing a some alt-right shadow trolls of making her standup suck horsecocks.

Sarah Silverman, Roseanne Barr, Ellen Degeneres, Joan Rivers, Lisa Lampanelli, maybe Tig Notaro (she has a huge following that's building, Conan and others are putting her in a spotlight, and some other male counterparts that aren't household names and about as new - like John Mulaney - are doing it)... Amy really isn't special.

The cold hard fact is that she isn't funny. She sucks at her profession. She isn't brave. She isn't strong. She's, frankly, not capable. This is the whole stupid Ghostbusters thing all over again. The terrible reviews weren't because men in the audience were screeching like howler monkeys in an outraged and testosterone fueled moment of confusion after seeing a capable female character. They weren't running towards the screen and slapping their penises against it, demanding that these leads subvert to there patriarchal dominance. The film got bad reviews because it was a fresh steaming piece of crap that the everyone called out for being... well, crappy. Amy Schumer's terrible reviews are because her special is the newest fresh steaming pile of crap that Netflix decided to broadcast to the world. Not because of vagina. Not because of ovaries. Because it just isn't any good. It's that easy.

Her following, in my opinion, is largely composed of a niche following. It's the young crowd that megaphones about the female struggle and that wears vagina hats to protest marches. They'd see any comedian that preaches what they want to hear. Kind of like a suckier version of Lewis Black. People that are pissed and hate the system will see him whether they roll on the floor laughing or not. But things change quickly once average Mr. and Mrs. Smith decide to watch Netflix because they're bored. They aren't the fanatics and they're judging on humor, nothing else.

She's doing nothing right now but showing that she's too cowardly to admit that maybe, just maybe, she's the problem and that her routine stinks. So instead she decides to try and hide behind some veil of "Wahh! It's those darn evil Redditors and there stern 'Girls Stink' mentality. Oh! And the administration because I don't agree with them!"

Basically, in conclusion, Amy sucks and needs to be adult enough to admit to it.

Here's the thing about success: it's two folds, it requires mass positive recognition.

So she claims success and here I am not giving a damn about her.

Any truly successful performer could very well do without people like me but she's making a lot of noise and getting people like me to notice her.

And in doing so I end up voicing my opinion about her performance. I wouldn't have done so and her rating would have been the same has any "normal" artist: composed from lots of fans and some critics but now people like me are joining in and giving their (not so positive) appreciation of her. And she makes more noise. You can guess where that leads.

Something akin to the Streisand effect.

You can have success but very few can claim to have it and end up with their general approval rating going up.

I wish she'd stop calling herself brave. I think the word she is looking for is "delusional". Her comedy is a streaming pile of shit. Stealing jokes and then delivering them poorly is not brave.

I can give her a little leeway. It could be possible that she makes up a joke and it is coincidentally similar to another comedians joke from 20 years prior. But not when it happens every comedy special, series, and/or episode. Is she too stupid to realize that can't continuously happen before someone might realize you are just a talentless hack who rides on coat tales of real comedic talent and then blames everyone else for the negativety surrounding her.

Going on stage and talking about her stinky vagina is not funny, it's vile. A few jokes about it with a decent delivery might work. But she is beating the dead horse... that is her vagina.

I wish her (and Leslie Jones) would just fuck off and realize her time is over. They got lucky. I really hope her career goes the way of Paulie Shore and fucking dies. Fuck it, I'll take Paulie Shore back over her.

But as I don't see her going away. As long as people keep throwing money away on her, we will never be ride of the Cancer that is Schumar.

All in all I thought her special was alright. Smiled at a few jokes, laughed at one and the rest ranged from kind of amusing to flat out annoying. It seemed like a lot of her material needed to be done in clubs for another few months to refine it, which is what most comedians do. They write a bit, work it in clubs and see what works and what doesn't so when they film a special, it's a polished joke.

Her comedy is very derivative from the people who inspired her, to the point where some of her material is just a pale facsimile of those comics. Like the whole "where to cum" Chappelle bit. Any comic will say they love Chappelle, but wouldn't even attempt to write jokes similar to his because his jokes are just straight up done better. Just like no one sees a Picasso and thinks, "That's really good... I'm gonna make a painting similar to his" It's already been done way better than you could possibly do it, so why even bother?

If you go through the almost 3000 reviews, there are only a handful with 3 or more stars mostly shill reviews, but thousands of one stars with the occasional two star reviews from people that didn't want to seem negative.

Fact is, if it was a conspiracy to trash her, there would be more than a handfull of positive reviews.

Fact is, she put herself all over the national media, made a spectacle of herself, and thousands of people viewed her special and were appalled. This wasn't a movie, or a musical performance, where taste is subjective. Her special was a rant, apparently drunken, obscene, foul and not funny. Yes humor can be subjective but there is also an objective standard. When the majority find your humor foul and offensive. If a guy did the same performance, joking about his foul crotch odors and killing a woman for not giving him oral sex, the majority would still rate it zero stars.

I'll be the one person to say it... I watched the whole show and laughed a lot. I liked it and my girlfriend liked it too. Was it raunchy and vulgar? Absolutely. But that's her bit. Every comedian has one. Jim Gaffigan is a damn successful and funny comedian because he talks in goofy voices and makes fun of himself for being fat, pasty, and eating fast food...it's his bit. Amy Schumer is the slutty female version of Jim Gaffigan. Dave Chappelle, Kat Williams, Chris Rock...being black humor. Gabriel Iglesias and Ralphie May...being morbidly obese humor. Anthony Jeselnik and Lisa Lampaneli....being a cunt humor. Not every comedian is a comic-genius-prodigy, but they all get their success from their bit-style and by appealing to the demographic that finds that stuff funny. Bring on the downvotes ya shmucks!

Take the voting population of the US who elected Trump. I could broadly characterize those people into groups. i.e those who did so to spite Hillary, those who are deluded in thinking Trump will 'make America great again', or others. Yet I could be a voter myself who didn't vote for Trump. Or one that did but for different reasons to the majority...

This is why there are genuine reasons to paint Reddit with a broad brush because there are elements of truth to the claims.

Well, I happen to currently be researching Factory Farming - and other forms of animal exploitation, and the ethics regarding the use of animals for food, entertainment, etc.

People say Reddit shouldn't have labels attached to them because it is a diverse and varied mix of people and interests...

Well, people are predictable. They behave in predictable ways. The larger the sub - the more predictable it becomes. The more linear the thinking. The easier it is to devolve to the lowest common denominator. Broad labels does not necessitate the inclusion of 100% of the websites users.

Also, if a person fits within the broad description of a label, it doesn't mean they automatically are included in all labels.
