Interesting that there is a 13% difference between the sexes in terms of sexual activity.

But here is where it gets really odd. (This is not a perfect analysis considering these sexual activity stats are recent and I am using 2018 college numbers, but I cannot imagine the 2018 numbers have dramatically leveled. Gender imbalances in college attendance have been fairly steady and growing for awhile.) In 2018, the UK gender ratio for college attendance was 57% female, 43% male. You would think that with males being in much shorter supply at universities, the law of supply and demand would take over and the "sexually active" stats by gender would be reversed. But apparently not so.

Further, if you break this down by numbers, there were 2.38 million students studying in the UK from 2018-2019. That means there were about 1.36 million females, and 1.02 million males attending university in the UK between 2018-2019. If you then figure in the sexually active statistics, that would make for about 640,000 sexually active females, and 350,000 sexually active males.

Think about that.

There is almost double the amount of sexually active female students versus the amount of sexually active male students. Double.

Are these women having sex with younger than college-age men? Are they having sex with men their age who aren't going to college? Are they having sex with older men? Are they having sex with the same small group of men who are their age and in college? Some combination of all of this?

I think the two most likely possibilities are the last two (older men/same small group of men), which would confirm these two talking points that are routinely discussed here.

My main culprit could be the prevalence of the internet. People have much more access to solo entertainment and have less need to interact with people face-to-face. Nowadays nearly everyone has their heads stuck in their phones. Pre smart phones there was a bigger chance for a conversation to be struck while waiting for a bus, nowadays everyone is in their own phone bubble.

Many people nowadays tend to spend their time at home on the internet. In the past people usually had to interact with other people to be entertained and one of those things lead to sex.

We have something like an "information overload", so we might go into a state of analysis paralysis and overthink stuff more, which makes us stumble or be anxious of social situations. We try to find the best solution ("powergame") and do things perfectly instead of letting things evolve naturally and also not being that afraid to stumble.

The speed and access provided by thechnology might have also got us used to instant results. Masturbating is a faster way to get sexual release then courting another person and making plans/aligning schedules with them. There were times when you had to wait for days (or more, depending on distance) for a reply to your letter and nowadays people start to panic if another person doesn't answer your message in one minute.

Trying to sum it up:

• Less need for face-to-face interactions for entertainment purposes

• Spending more time at home due to most entertaiment that you need being at home.

• Overanalysing stuff due to the sheer amount of information aviable.

• Less patience (the whole "sex must be on/after the first date" mindset)

• Other worries (like earning enough money to support yourself) taking priority over sex.

I definitely think our society needs to work to appreciate, value, and encourage men. However, as someone who was raised in a very religious family (homeschooled, didn’t date until college) I see these statistics in a more positive light. But I feel like a large emphasis is put on hook up culture and men are encouraged to engage in it, only when they fail miserably as most will, do they blame women and OLD. This was the case for my female friends as well, I remember us longing for men who actually seemed interested in us besides sex but nope even average dudes were often sexually crass, and not seriously pursing women. Obviously this isn’t all men because some people in college are in relationships and I am not saying that every man can easily get a girlfriend yes that definitely takes work BUT we can’t pretend that the general attitude surrounding dating hasn’t become extremely casual compared to the past and that there is a lot less focus on seriously pursuing a relationship in the college years. This hurts men’s opportunities for sex. Even on PPD I still see ignorant arguments being pushed forward by men claiming that women benefit most from monogamy and relationships NOT true. So long as men continue to believe that relationships are “bad” and take away a man’s freedom we will see more of this trend. The cold, rational true that the paper shows is that the overwhelming majority of men and women aren't having sex. This appears to be very related to the fact that, for whatever reason, young people aren't making sex a priority. Out of the people who do, women take a 10% lead, but the majority of sex is also happening within relationships, with that 10% lead probably being partially explained by the fact that women are more likely than men to be in a relationship. The CC is largely a myth juding by these stats. But, of course, since my take down doesn't appeal to people's insecurities these tweets will be taken as another doomsday warning in incel forums.

Because the UK university system is skewing more towards commuter students who live with their parents (property prices are also part of this), men are less likely to entertain the thought of an older partner (who has a physical place to fuck), and other than Oxbridge, UK university culture doesn't provide social opportunities--clubs, intramurals, etc.

The social isolation caused by student culture in the uK actually informed decisions I made about my own housing as a grad student. Women in general tend to be better at maintaining social networks, so they're less reliant on the school.

Finally, it's much, much easier to get a white collar career without a degree in the UK than it is in the US (many stockbrokers go through apprenticeships, for example). So going to university at all has some selection biases, which may also skew things.

Seems about right. Men in Universities are likely broke or have very little in the way of resources. Women in Universities are also broke but they prefer to just date men with resources so it's on to the older guys and maybe the odd professor. Truth is that most guys these days recognize that when in college they have little to no chance of dating a girl who in the past might have dated him and gotten married to him when he graduated. Just the times they are a changing. My advice to these younger guys is to go after older women and treat them as practice. Like a pitcher gets loose in the bullpen you practice and stay loose while concentrating on career. Your time comes when you hit your stride in your late 20's and early 30's - oh and try to keep your student loan debt to a minimum or if you can avoid it - do so.

Universities in the UK, are probably no more than 30 min walks to which ever city centre it may be, they have more days off than they'd like to admit, be 18 by the time they start university and so can go to night clubs every Thu-Sat and the meat markets is majorly non-students. Women will have sex with guys from clubs, a lot of the time it clearly isn't with male students and they're all going wild being liberated from their parents.

Then the politics in universities, is much more puritanical, like US colleges, LGBTQ+ sounds like the worst swinger party and they have a bull dyke with a megaphone about how they're not the only gay in their village, what do they do? This isn't a problem. For most of us young guys who are studying, sex is mostly secondary to the studying and hobbies, sure, having a gf would be a plus, but it's not that important as university is for studying and building you skills repertoire. I also think that the majority of women in university are having sex with older more established men, so I wouldn't say that it's only a minority of men who are having sex with all the women in university, of course there are a few dudes who do have regular casual sex but it's not with all college age women.

Of course there is anxiety when you start thinking about your insecurities as a guy(like "I'm not good looking, how will I get a woman who's attracted to me once I'm ready?")but that's not a big deal if you don't make it so.

The biggest driver is that marriage rates are down among younger people. Married men have sex, unmarried men not so much. Its unreasonable to expect women to have a lot of sex with a bunch of men they're not married to. There was a (historically very short) period post-60s where this was maybe more common. I’m from the UK and personally I don’t date because men think it’s acceptable to try and sleep with you despite not knowing you or having been in a long term relationship with you.

One thing I find crazy about men and women is that it’s always the women who desire a long term happy relationship with a man (which doesn’t happen these days) whereas men only complain that they can’t extract no strings attached sex from women as if they are a porn substitute and a walking vagina.

Women aren’t being picky, they actually need consistency and decency from men to prove they aren’t just trying to use and abuse your body. I’m doing my masters degree currently and haven’t been on a single date with a man or slept with one... same with most of the ladies in my class.

Men don’t ask women on dates, they don’t want relationships, they just want sex. All they do is stamp and cry about how they can’t get their PP wet! Most women give sex to men thinking it means they want commitment, they are also brainwashed by porn to think they MUST provide it for a relationship to form and it never works.

Once they realise they’ve been brainwashed and manipulated by man made porn, women will probably stop sleeping with men like they are right now and realise it will never make a man love her... the rates of sexless men will then increase.

Survey data is shit data to start with, it always is shit data, but as someone who grew up in it, it wasn't like we were all trad cons in relationships or riding a pussy parade. Most guys didn't have a real gf, or didn't have one until senior year. I didn't get sex on the regular until my last year of school, with my now wife, before then I was just another n=1 once dude.

If I could go back, my dorky, way to young looking 18 year old body, I would fucking slay because its game (plus I'd start lifting at 18 instead of 20).

It’s not like the old days. Students aren’t having sex. Well, some are, but not nearly as many as you might think. And if you're wondering why, it's not because Covid has kept thousands of them away from campus over the past 12 months.

The truth, according to a new report, "Sex and Relationships Among Students", is that they don’t want to have sex particularly - nearly six in ten (58 per cent) say making friends at university is more important than finding a sexual partner.

Just 16 per cent declared themselves excited at the prospect of having sex when they became a student. And male students are less sexually active than their female counterparts, with just a over a third (34 per cent) saying they’ve had sex during their time at university, compared to nearly half (47 per cent) of women, and more than one in ten (11 per cent) say they are celibate because they want to be.

Men are more likely than women to report they’ve had more sexual partners. And nearly one in ten of sexual encounters occur during university welcome weeks.

And this is important - if not least to dispel FOMO (fear of missing out) amongst today’s students, says Nick Hillman, director of HEPI (Higher Education Policy Unit), which conducted the survey amongst some 1,000 undergraduates last summer. It’s hard to enjoy yourself when you feel everyone else is having a better time.

“People have very inaccurate perceptions of others’ lives especially in relation to sex,” says Hillman. We don’t get better at this either - previous research found that people believed women might have had 17 sexual partners by the time they reached their 40s and 50s - in fact the true number is eight.

And here’s another overblown story, says Hillman. Newspapers love salacious headlines about students taking to sex work to make ends meet. “But self-selecting internet polls can’t provide an accurate picture of what student life is really like,” he says. And it’s a lot less exciting than we are led to believe.

“Given the evidence about many students’ poor mental health and the high incidence of loneliness, it’s important to build up a more nuanced picture… about how students really live,” he says.

Students have been accused of most things over the years - being lazy, having a three-year knees-up, binge drinking, drug taking, and more recently of being overly woke and sanctimonious.

This is the fault of baked-in beliefs, says one media lecturer at a London university, created by the days of grants and no debt, new sexual freedoms and the relative certainty that a job would turn up.

“I would say the student sex thing is a baby boomer obsession, and quite a male one,” she says. “The pill, easy access to abortion was a game changer for a whole generation and that did shift everything for students.”

Today’s universities are more sober and circumspect - excessive student drinking is abating, the past year has been a social washout for many, and even in a normal year it’s the libraries rather than the bars that stay open all night.

If students have any free time, says the lecturer, many spend it earning cash rather than having sex.

Her students - undergraduates and postgraduates – tend to be more worried about homesickness, juggling jobs and study, or whether they are going to have a successful career. “Sex is just not top of their radar.”

A focus the wild side of university life is a narrative peculiar to the UK. As a nation, we are unusual in using university as a way to leave home and grow up.

In other countries, students mostly live at home while they study - a passion killer if ever there was one.

“It’s cultural,” says Dr Sarah Nicholson, a retired NHS psychiatrist. “British nationals still think of university as an opportunity to find their way and experiment - a much broader experience than just going to study.”

But sexual mores have shifted, she says, and men are scared about getting consent wrong. At some universities, it’s compulsory to attend training around consent and coercion.

And only just over a quarter of undergraduates say that what they learned in their lives before university actually prepared them for sex and relationships when they got there. “In the old days, you knew the rules,” says Nicholson. “It was the man’s responsibility to make the first move.

"For girls, it was how much flirting you could do without ending up in bed. And for boys, how little flirting you could get away with before ending up in bed. Boys in our generation weren’t shocked if you said no. But they did know on first dates you could be as optimistic as you liked but you weren’t getting anywhere.”

Maybe technology has replaced the flirting, she says. Four in ten students say they’ve sexted a partner - mostly sending naked pictures of themselves, while a few have made use of video software to have sex.

“And that could never have happened in the old days - you couldn’t talk dirty on a payphone in the corridor.”

While education around consent is essential, says Nicholson, it’s up to peer groups to work out new norms as they meet and mix - only the pandemic has limited this.

“But you don’t want the previous generation telling you what the moral code is. That’s very much for your own peer group to work out.”

For parents, it's hard to know whether to be relieved that one's young adult children are not having sex at university, or worried that they're not having enough fun, or that no intimate relationships could mean they are lonely.

The truth is, ask parents today about their student children’s sex lives and most don’t have a clue. Some report that their kids are approaching sex with gusto, others say their children are more worried about debt, career, and the impact of Covid-19 and Brexit.

“I can honestly say that I have never worried that the pandemic, for instance, has scuppered my son’s chances of getting laid or put the kibosh on his prospective promiscuity,” says Rebecca*, a mother of a second-year undergraduate at the University of Birmingham.

“I don’t think young women need men and sex in that way,” says Tess, mother of a second-year student. “They are a lot less needy of male approval to get their self-esteem as they were in the past. Then, having a boyfriend, being thought ‘hot’ was really important. These young women are much better educated and empowered now. If my daughter meets someone she likes, then fine, but she’s not worried about it.”

The real wisdom from this research, says Nicholson, is to know whatever you do, you’re not alone. More than half of respondents say they watched porn, nearly a third say they’ve had an intimate relationship at university, a quarter arrive at university never having kissed anyone and 43 per cent have never had sex.

“And that’s the benefits of surveys such as these," says Nicholson. "People read them and say, ‘oh, thank goodness I’m not the only virgin’.”

Because women have a choice now- this is how it always would’ve been if women had had rights since the beginning. 50% (honestly more than that) of men are insufferable to us women and now that we aren’t being sold off like cattle against our wills and unable to get divorces, we can finally say no. Overall, just under 90% of British men university aged are sexually active. So this is strictly a UNI problem
Over 19% of students are foreign. So likely they don't fair well in the local SMP
There's more pressure on students in every country to knuckle down and work hard. Young Millenials and zoomers are over all partying less and studying harder.

I think equality is the issue. Women make more money and are better educated.

Education/ career are big factors in makeing women wait to have a family or be married and can also be a replacement for purpose. Add to that younger women make more money and are better educated then equivelent men; there really is less of a reason for women to date for the purpose of a long term relationship.

Obviously equality is good so this is just going to be the new normal.

If online stuff does matter, then it has to be social media. Women caring about being judged more for how their life looks then how it actually is.

I’m assuming this study was heterosexual men, because homosexual men are the most sexually active out of any group.. The answer is simple.. it’s nature. Look at the past when their were actual wars and men that weren’t the best, most strategic, most intelligent and largest in stature died fighting. If the weakest men ( and I mean weakest by not physical strength, but by intelligence) all survive and reproduce, we have a weak species. That’s why women are more attracted to the hardest worker, the most intelligent and the most genetically dominant males.. We are also more attracted to the males that commit.. again, survival of the species. If a man doesn’t stick around, it shows weakness of character, which gives the woman no security that her children will be provided for. Less sex in men, lowers testosterone, lowers sperm count. They are then defeated.. we see “ poor me “ type men.. which is unattractive.. We see men having temper tantrum’s because they can’t get a woman.. and then you have men resenting women.. With that, weaker men only become less desirable. The men with strong attributes become even stronger and more in demand.

The survey results are predictable. Females have the advantage when they’re young and most students are young. The tables turn at about 25-30 after which men have the advantage and women’s opportunities are fairly limited. Although frustrating for males in the short run women are the ones damaging themselves in the long run since they’re wasting opportunities which will never come again. They have a fairly small window in which to select someone for the long term.

Maybe there is a correlation between level of education in males and their sexlessness. I wonder if a high level of education in males (especially in STEM subjects) in any case diverts the libido and lower the competivity high enough to not be attractive to the younger women who prefer maybe simple, not so educated men but already independent (not living with parents).
